Useful for basic info. Handy size.

A very helpful book for background info on Indonesia, some helpful phrases to know for interactions with Indonesians, and good tips on the highlight tourist spots in Sumatra. I found it very useful for my brief trip there (8 days) this past summer. If you do go, you should consider having someone with you who is fluent in Bahasa Indonesian, as the locals will actually be even more helpful to you than the book.

In another cogent analysis of U.S. foreign policy (see his 1999: Victory Without War , LJ 6/1/88), Nixon argues that the end of the Cold War doesn't justify a renewed U.S. isolationism. He counsels the "world's lone superpower" to seize the opportunity to insure its vital interests by distinguishing between its critical and peripheral interests, then matching its capabilities and national will to its identified needs. While debunking the view that the U.S. has peaked as a world power, Nixon is critical of "fight every foe" idealism and "woolly-headed" overexpectations of the United Nations in an economically interdependent 21st century world. Viewing human rights as a priority (critical but not strategic) and warning of the continued need for military power and strategic arms control, Nixon brings his substantial experience, travels, and conversations with world leaders to bear in chapters on the Soviet Union, Europe, the Pacific Triangle, the Muslim world, and the Southern Hemisphere (Asia, Africa, and Latin America). Liberal (with a capital L) doses of realpolitik from an elder statesman whose shrewd and unsentimental approach to foreign affairs remains well worth heeding. Accepting the premise that nations have no friends, only interests, Nixon suggests a wealth of policy initiatives the US could take to ensure that the 21st century brings such millennial blessings as peace, freedom, and progress. If the former President misses few chances to remind readers of his wide acquaintanceship among world leaders past and present, he nonetheless offers an activist agenda whose broad guidelines are informed by idealism as well as down-to-earth pragmatism. In blueprinting the role America might play in what remains of the USSR, for example, the author warns against aid to centrists (like Gorbachev) ``who carry the baggage of the Communist past.'' Instead, he argues, Washington should help erstwhile Soviet republics and satellites establish the institutions needed to make free markets work. Asserting that arms control (not disarmament) still ranks among the Global Village's most urgent priorities, Nixon next turns his attention to Europe. He characterizes the industrialized members of the EC as closet protectionists while cautioning that the Continent, historically, has proved appreciably less stable than the Middle East. Covered as well are the Southern Hemisphere, the widening Muslim world, and the Pacific Basin. While Nixon harbors few illusions (noting, for example, that ``Democracy is not a potted plant that can be transplanted into any soil''), he subscribes to the beguiling notion that Japan and the US share any number of democratic and economic values. Mr. Nixon's views in retrospect

In the past ten months I have learned so much about President Nixon. And I have to tell you I am liking the man (and his views) more and more. Yes, he made some egregious mistakes, but those should not sideline his opinions on a myriad of topics. More than twenty years have passed since "Seize the Moment" was first published, and yet many of its views are even more relevant today. My favorite quote from the book is the following: "Democratic socialism is a fashionable fraud. The only economic success stories in the developing world have come in countries whose leaders rejected the siren call of socialism tempting them to sacrifice opportunity and progress on the altar of equality." I may send a copy of this book to President Obama.

A great book

Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-94) is well remembered for the Watergate scandal, but he is also remembered as one of the greatest foreign policy strategists that the United States ever had. Seize the Moment was President Nixon’s next-to-last book, and was published in 1992. This was after the successful end of the Cold War and the first Gulf War, when talking-heads were talking about the “end of history,” and/or that America was a declining power that needed to withdraw from world leadership.

In this book, President Nixon argues against these myths, and outlines the course that the United States must take in dealing with the rest of the world. Included are chapters on the former Soviet Union, Europe, the Pacific Triangle, the Muslim world, and the southern hemisphere. However, the best chapter is the final one – The Renewal of America – in which he discusses what needs to be done to renew the United States, and prepare it for the challenges of the future.

Overall, I found this to be a great book, one that really shows off President Nixon’s abilities. Indeed, while reading this book I couldn’t help but wish that Presidents Clinton and Bush the Younger had read it. This is a very interesting book, one that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to consider where the county is going from here.

Don't let the Author Turn you away

This book is a recipe for any current president as we look to establish peace not only around the world, but starting with the Middle East.

I got this book some time ago largely to just put on my bookshelf. After years sitting there, I read it because I have read a lot about Richard Nixon, but never anything by him. So sum up the book, it provides a prescription with statistical and analytical supporting argument for the way forward in world politics as the one remaining superpower. I did not realize what I was going to read about until I started reading and now must place it right next to Kissinger's book on the same subject. While both men are despised by many from the political left, I believe their worldviews are required reading to formulate balanced views. When I contrast both books I find Nixon focused on the world of finance and business and Kissenger focused on politics and power. Both have a common denominator, which is national security.

Nixon begins his worldviews much like Kissenger with Europe. But Nixon brings Russia into the mix much more prominently. In doing so he provides a lot of data to support his argument that Gorbechov was a half-wit when measured up for the job he undertook. He paints a picture with numeric data on economics to demonstrate Gorbechov's basic misunderstanding of fundamental economics. With regard to the oppressive measures he imposed upon his people and his neighbors while at the same time promoting glastnost, and prestroika shows the conflicted side of Gorbechov. Gorbechov's policy and actions are painted as a contradiction in terms on both economic and human liberties fronts. After reading the chapter on Russia, I came away with yet another example of the Nobel Peace prize being a Swedish lark.

Nixon saw the rest of Europe with a few minor concerns. He shares a fear of Empire Europe and a Eastern Block that would be subject to civil war. His fear of an EU albeit muted seems to have come to fruition just as he visualized. In my opinion, today's EU has many national conflicts that leave the idea of Fortress Europe unlikely and at the same time an EU, lead by the power hungry French and Germans, that is prone to tell the United States to go home. That is until some civil conflict requires us to return and help resolve the conflict militarily, as in Yugoslavia. Keep in mind the French and Germans have yet to prove themselves as a prime mover to mediate an international dispute to a peaceful end.

As Nixon moves to Asia, he leads with Japan. Here you discover his propensity to lead the world through economic policy and sound business practice. As opposed to the impression he left in his role of the inherited Viet Nam fiasco. He recognizes Japan's entanglement of government and business, but is clearly critical of those in the united States who seek protectionism. W. Bingham Hunter (Ph.D., University of Aberdeen) is vice president and academic dean at Phoenix Seminary. He previously served as professor of New Testament and senior vice president and dean of education at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, professor of Bible exposition and academic dean at Talbot School of Theology, and visiting professor at Western Seminary and the Associated Canadian Theological Seminaries. Very Insightful and Helpful Book on Prayer

This book really helped change my thinking on prayer and drew me to pray more, which is Bing's intent. I just taught a seminar on prayer and used several quotes from the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in deepening their relationship with God. It answers a number of practical and important theological questions about prayer in a readable style. Well done!

One of the best books on understanding prayer and the one to whom we pray

Simple yet profound, Hunter's indepth approach on understanding prayer comes from looking at the one to whom we are praying. The first portion of his book looks at prayer from the perspective of who God is and how he acts. Written in the fashion of J.I. Packer's Knowing God, Hunter examines prayer in the light of God's holiness, sovereign power, innate goodness and spirit compositon. The second half of the book addresses issues like thanksgiving and praying in the name of Jesus. The entire book is well written, insightful, filled with scripture; yet spiced with personal annadotes.

Easy to read Polemic on Prayer

Prof. Hunter doesn't deal in a shallow fashion with prayer, but engages the major theological mysteries concerning prayer with a scholars mind and a prayers' heart. The book is easy to read and I felt as if Prof. Hunter was having a conversation with me.

The insights on questions such as: "Does prayer change God's mind?"; "What can I tell an all-knowing God?"; "Why pray to a God who lets people hurt?" were all satisfactorily dealt with. I highly commend this book.

Great book and is the favorite of my kids

This book is entertaining and fun to read. Very positive on how a mom manages to get his septuples mice to the school. My kids loved it and I read it every night to them.

About the Author
Artist Michael Jon Grell quickly made a name for himself in comics by tackling one of its most difficult assignments — the seemingly infinite universe of the Legion of Super-Heroes. From there, Grell joined Dennis O’Neil for a well-received Green Lantern and Green Arrow revival and might have become a regular contributor to the Batman office if his creation WARLORD had not taken off to become DC’s most successful fantasy title ever. Grell (whose other works of note include Jon Sable, Freelance, Starslayer and GREEN ARROW) still writes the occasional Batman tale.

Hits the Target

Still reeling from the events of the Longbow Hunters, Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance try their best to make a life in Seattle. Green Arrow is facing his own mortality, and Dinah is still trying to get over her torture. This book collects isues 1-6 of the 1980's Green Arrow relaunch. There are 3 stories, with 2 issues per story. They are:

1. After 18 years, a wealthy child killer is released on a technicality. Green Arrow must keep him away from the only survivor, now an adult counselor, and make sure the killer doesn't go back to his old ways.

2. Green Arrow is recruited by a foreign government to recover a biological weapon before the Chinese do. He reencounters soldier of fortune Eddie Fryers.

3. When a series of gay bashings grip Seattle, Green Arrow tries to get to the bottom of it and runs afoul of gang leaders .

The stories are all very much grounded in reality. The theme of an urban hunter plays strongly as Green Arrow stalks his prey. Gone are the trick arrows and innocence of youth, Grell's Arrow is a weary veteren. While it is obvious this is set in the 1980's, it is still relevant today. The creators of Arrow have taken a lot from this low-key street level series.

Ed Hannigan does a great job as artist. While it is sad Grell could not write and draw the series, the art is a good match for the tone the writer's theme. Recommended.

1988 Green Arrow's fresh start

This is the new (for 1988) Green Arrow series following where the previous limited series (Longbow Hunters) finished. Mike Grell wrote it for 80 issues with several high quality artists as Ed Hannigan, Dan Jurgens, Rick Hoberg, and Denys Cowan. This was the best time for Green Arrow ever.

Eighties' comics are the best

Includes the first six issues of Mike Grell's run from 1988. Three stories, two issues each: in the title story, "Hunter's Moon", Oliver's on the trail of a paedophile who's been recently released from prison; in "The Champions", the Soviet Union (!) recruits Oliver to retrieve a biological experiment on a remote island before the Chinese get to it; and in "The Gauntlet" the city's gays are being attacked.

It's all very dark alright. Despite the subject matter, these stories don't really offer any in-depth social analysis; but having roots in real-world problems does make the action that crucial little bit more believable. The hero himself is pleasantly righteous and bad-tempered, constantly snarling through gritted teeth. Hannigan and Giordano are responsible for the art and it's all very eighties in feel and style, but hey, that's the way I like it.

Slight OCD: The colors show their age and technical deficiency, there's quite a bit of moiré patterns throughout. The paper quality isn't the best either.

During a typical day of data gathering, Nate believes his mind is failing: the subject whale has "Bite Me" scrawled across its tail. Events become even stranger as the self-proclaimed "action nerds," Nate, photographer Clay, their research assistant Amy, and Kona, a white Rasta (a Jewish kid from New Jersey), encounter sabotage to their data and equipment. They also observe increasingly bizarre whale behavior, including a phone call from the whale to their wealthy sponsor to ask that Nate bring it a hot pastrami and Swiss on rye, and discover both a thriving underwater city and the secret to what happened to Amelia Earhart.

Thoughtful, irreverent, and often hilarious, Moore has crafted a tale that contains a bit of the saga of declining whale populations due to hunting and habitat destruction, as well as his over-the-top, decadent wit as applied to scientific methodology and professional jealousies. Go, go, go!

Some of Christopher Moore's funniest work. Or at least most absurd. Or at least, um, something. I've yet to read anything by him that didn't make me absurdly happy, and I've read, I think, eighty percent of his library?

This is a good, weird little story that never lacks for a smart laugh while still making you care about the larger narrative and the individual character arcs.

The scene with the boat the giant, yeah, appendages might not fall under the category of smart laughs, but it's one that'll stick with you for sure.

More good clean fun from Moore!

I'm a huge fan of Christopher Moore, but when I read the description of the book on the jacket (something about scientists studying whales), I have to admit I wasn't too interested. But my faith in Moore caused me to go ahead and take the plunge. I'm very glad I did.

This is his first real "science-fiction" book, with the science of whales and whale communication playing an important role. As near as I can tell, much of the opening third of the book contains lots of "true" information about the state of our knowledge of whales today. Later, when the book goes off on some truly bizarre tangents, the "fiction" is well thought out. It's insane, but well thought out!

We follow the adventures of a group of people with various interests in learning about whales, from serious scientists to hangers-on, to stoners just looking for easy work. The best thing about Moore's novels are the wacky characters, who manage to become sweet and endearing by the end of the book. His novels are crazily plotted, but characters always come to the fore. There are some funny romances and some minor characters that are just a lot of fun. It's the kind of book that you imagine getting a big-screen treatment as you're reading it...you just want to start casting it in your head. And Moore, to me, is one of the few writers who actually evokes laugh-out-loud moments. Just clever turns of a phrase or an unlikely methaphor that makes me laugh in admiration.

I hesitate to discuss the plot, because to give you a sketchy overview might turn you off, and to go into depth would reveal too many of the delightful treats in store. If you've read and enjoyed Moore before, by all means take a look. If you haven't read Christopher Moore and are in the mood for some wacky but touching fun...take a look. I think you'll be pleased.

Whales and Their-uh-Songs-ahem

This book should be sold at the Phallic Museum in Reykjavik Iceland, right next to the preserved whale willies in their really really big jars. In fact, the most hilarious scene in the book has to do with the aforementioned items.
Fluke isn't as jam-packed with funny scenes as other Moore books, but it has plenty of unforgettable characters. Kona the ersatz Hawaiian Rastafarian was my favorite. Unfortunately, Moore couldn't quite slide his message in with the twisted humor as neatly as he has in the past (Lamb, Coyote Blue, ), so he was forced to put it in an appendix, albeit a humorous one.
In general, while Fluke was well worth reading, it was missing Moore's usual go-for-broke insanity

"The Golden Horse" (Zelta zirgs) a play written by Rainis is one of the most important pieces of Latvian literature. It is now translated to English by Vilis Inde. "The Golden Horse" is a fairy tale that provided Latvians with lessons to achieve cultural autonomy and independence. Idealism - Altruism - Unity! These were the keys for victory over Imperialist Russia and the Baltic Germans who controlled Latvia at the turn of the 20th century. Rainis wrote "The Golden Horse" following the 1905 Russian/Latvian Revolution and before the Declaration of Independence in 1918. He and his wife Aspazija were the spiritual leaders in the fight for greater rights for workers, peasants and Latvian culture. Although independence was achieved, it was short lived. The Soviet Union annexed Latvia during World War II. Fifty years passed, and a new opportunity for freedom arose as the Soviet Union disintegrated. Therefore, Latvia achieved its second opportunity for independence in 1991. In this play, a young peasant climbs the mountain of blue glass and green ice, wakes the princess and saves the kingdom. Good prevails over evil. Light overcomes darkness. Idealism, altruism and unity provide the path to victory at any level of society. The "Afterword" of the book includes an extensive discussion of Latvian history and Rainis' crucial role in Latvia's independence movement. It provides the key to understanding the symbolism that was obvious to every Latvian at the time it was written. The translation also introduces the reader to important aspects of Latvian culture. Perhaps, the most important is the close relationship with nature. Rainis polishes the amber so that the reader can see the detail within. Rainis' lessons are forever timely and relevant though out the world, Latvia and even the individual.

About the Author
Vilis Inde is a first generation Latvian whose first language was Latvian. He was raised in the hope that the family could one day return to an independent Latvia. His immersion in Latvian culture was great. As a child, he participated in a theatrical production of "The Golden Horse." The idealism presented by Rainis has stayed with him his entire life. After practicing law in New York and Minneapolis, Inde wrote "Art in the Courtroom" (Praeger 1998) and created a photo book "Signs of Marfa" (2009). He began to translate "The Golden Horse" a number of years back. The goal was to provide an English speaker with an opportunity to learn some important aspects of Latvian culture. Inde has traveled to Latvia on numerous occasions both pre and post 1991 Independence. He claims that Latvia provided him with an identity and that America provided him with the opportunity to undertake the translation

Fascinating introduction to Baltic history and Latvia

First published in 1974, Libidinal Economy is a major work of twentieth century continental philosophy. In it, Lyotard develops the idea of economies driven by libidinal 'energies' or 'intensities' which he claims flow through all structures, such as the human body and political or social events. He uses this idea to interpret a diverse range of subjects including political economy, Marxism, sexual politics, semiotics and psychoanalysis. Lyotard also carries out a broad critique of philosophies of desire, as expounded by Deleuze and Guattari, Nietzsche, Bataille, Foucault and de Sade.

About the Author
Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) was Professor of Philosophy at several institutes of higher learning in Paris and at the University of California. A member of the radical group Socialisme ou Barbarie, he later went on to become one of the founding figures of postmodernism with his work The Postmodern Condition.

An important work by the late, missed and brilliant Francois Lyotard. An effective response to Deleuze and Guattari's "Anti-Oedipus", Lyotard almost succeeds in showing the libidinal drives underlying not only the economy but a critique of Marxism too. Here while seemingly accepting Freud's idea of the libido, Lyotard shows how much more complex and satisfying his take of society is compared to the cumbersome and unsuccessful try by Deleuze and Guattari to combine Marx and Freud. Lyotard uses ideas from Bataille to stress the organic development of man and society in contrast to the mechanistic structures of "Anti-Oedipus" which is reminiscent of most of the French rationalist school who want to reduce everything to equations of either bodies without organs, or a formula by Descartes.

This book appeals to people who realize how wrong ideas have always been compared to the unpredictability of the ways a police state could twist everything to make Christians the perfect kind a rabble to kick around. I have become so well versed in how these ideas resonate that danger is the social context that makes music better than what marginal creatures at best can accomplish.
