I am loving this series

I was so excited when the author contacted me to review this book. I loved the first one so much, so I was super excited to see what happens next.

Let me start with what I LOVED about this book :)!

When Adam is captured by The Agency they erase his memories of Livia and they train him to be a soldier. When they are out on a mission he sees Livia and cannot understand the feelings that come up when he sees her. He realizes that Livia is the girl he keeps seeing in his dreams. Livia can see his struggle when they meet eyes, but cannot convince him to come with her.

Livia and Daniel get together in Alaska and decide it's time to locate the other kids like them. Livia only agrees when Daniel tells her that he will help her save her love Adam.

There is so much going on in this book. Run ins with The Agency. Meeting new characters with abilities. Which is my favorite part :). Trying to bring The Agency down. There is a plan to clone the kids with abilities, and some people from the inside are also trying to stop it.

This book is exciting, and has lots of escapes going on. It's great. It was hard to put down, and was fast moving the whole time. Someone was always watching. It was a bit creepy how The Agency seemed to always know where the "enhanced" kids were.

Now....I am sooo sad to say this because I really do love this book. BUT, I think there might be a love triangle coming. I hate love triangles more than anything. It is the only reason why I am not giving this a 5 star. I am excited to see what the next book brings, but I am not excited about the triangle I am going to have to go through. They just frustrate me soooooooo bad.

Thoughts
This is exactly the kind of book that I love and hate at the same time. I love it cause its such a good story and I hate it because of how much I care about the main characters! It was so hard for me to watch Adam forget his love for Livia. They were really cute together in the first book but their time together was too short. There so many times that I wanted to take Adam by the shoulders and shake him to wake him up.

Livia on the other hand really grew during this book. She started out in Resilient as a little unsure of herself and naive. Through that book she learns that people close to her have lied to her and she has to go on the run. In Awakened she grows into a real leader of the group, making the decisions and leading the band. I love it when characters evolve and I really enjoyed seeing the growth in Livia.

Finally, the supporting characters have their own secrets which really adds to the story. With all of the different personalities, all with their own particular talents, it leads to a very interesting mix.

This book kind of reminded me of Mockingjay because of how Adam turns against Livia. I found that book so heartbreaking to read for the same reasons. Its always hard for me to read about one person being forced to turn against the person that they loved without knowing it. The second book in a trilogy sometimes falls prey to exposition but this book keeps the adventure moving. If you like books about teenagers with powers fighting against the establishment for their freedom, this is the series for you.

She was bound to hate me and no knowledge ever hurt as bad as knowing that. That day one the river when she kissed me back, I saw a sparkle in her eyes, and hope brewed inside of me, but now all I feel is defeat.”

5 stars. Wow, I’m blown away with how amazing this series is. I love love love this series!!! It was so much fun and it was an exciting read!!

But there’s blue eyes that still haunt his dreams and memories. Livia and Adam’s old friend Daniel are out to try and rescue Adam from this new life. I don’t want to give away too much because there’s so much excitement and surprises awaiting you in this book!! You definitely need to read this book, to fully understand what I’m talking about!!

Death Wish

Jacques Mesrine was the French counterpart to America's John Dillinger. He was media savvy, good looking, astute in his assessment of the zeitgeist and quite smart. Unfortunately, the counterpart of all that was his unapologetic violence; but, by-and-large, that was and remains his great attraction. His reputation lives on, in large part due to his 1977 autobiography, "L'instinct de mort". In 2008, Vincent Cassel (in a stunning performance) played Mesrine in the two-part film adaptation of, "L'instinct de mort"(directed by Jean-François Richet and written by Abdel Raouf Dafri). The movie is generally true to the book and well worth seeing. Regardless, it generated renewed interest in Mesrine. The French company, Flammarion/Pocket, still sells the book. As far as I know, the English translation remains out-of-print. Hopefully, a re-issued translation will be forthcoming. This review is from the 2008 French/Pocket edition.

Jacques was an unapologetic sociopath and not all that likeable. However, his brutal candor is refreshing: "J'étais déprimé avec malgré tout une rage de vivre dans le fond de moi même. Cette violence intérieure me faisait envisager les solutions extrêmes pour me sortir de ma minable condition de vie". During the War, his family were maquisards. Mesrine père was a German POW and was the absent father figure for whom Mesrine fils pined. Jacques' formative encounter with a Nazi officer molded his behavior into expressions of sympathy with the "common man": witness, for example, his intercession on behalf of hapless Algerian peasants during the French-Algerian War, a brutal conflict in which Mesrine served in combat (as a volunteer). Of course, the "nature vs. nurture" issue remains relevant, but it was, in my estimation, these two experiences that helped render him "gun crazy", preditory and cynical. It was his cunning that allowed him to successfully portray himself as a modern-day Robin Hood.

Jacques delivers many a lacerating, penetrating and timeless condemnation of modern society: "Qu'avais-je vu? Des gueules tristes, des regards fatigués, des individues usés par un travail mal payé mas bien obligés de le faire pour survivre, ne pouvant s'offrir que le strict minimum. Des êtres incapables de satisfaire leur moindres désires, condamnés à être des rêveurs permanents devant les vitrines de luxe et les agences de voyages. Des estomacs, clients attitrês du plat du jour et du petit verre de vin rouge ordinaire. Des êtres connaissant leur avenir puisque n'en ayant pas, des robots exploiteés de fichês, respectueux des lois plus par peur que par honêteté." These sentiments place him squarely in the nascent counter-cultural vision of Western civilization: against "the establishment", condemning the "man in the gray flannel suit", the non-conformist raging against the suffocating effects of modern society on creativity, individuality, enforced by a police-machine in the service of moneyed interests.

Mesrine strips away every affectation and his book is literally searing in its honesty. Of course, some of his observations (especially on women) sit poorly in the current Western social milieu. Take, for instance his Céline-like characterization of an elephantine female saloon-keeper: "La patronne du bar, une vieille maquerelle, me parlait toujours avec un certain respect dans la voix...Son lit m'aurait été sûrement ouvert...Mais, même à moitié saoul, j'étais tourjours resté assez conscient pour ne pas servir de couverture a ses cent dix kilos de bonned graisse visqueuse...je m'étais amusé à l'imaginer sur le dos, les pattes écartées, avec ses seins flasques et énormes pendant sur le coté comme deu drapeaux en berne." Very pungent. Not too nice. Very, very funny. While Jacques studied at the prestigious Catholic school Collège de Juilly, his bank robbing, kidnapping, country-hopping, incarceration-burdened career probably didn't leave him much time for reading, so I view the book as entirely original.

Doubtless, armchair psychologists could have an orgy of gratifying "insights" into Mesrine's personality and find all sorts of dubious explanations for his sociopathic behavior. Mesrine admits a few of them himself (striving for paternal approbation, at least transiently). The very fact that the book provides such a clear and unvarnished self-portrait speaks for its integrity as a biography; as a social commentary; as an adventure story; and as a literary work. Unlike Emit Grogan's contrived and derivative book ("Ringolevio"), Mesrine delivers a compelling portrait of life outside the law. Its well worth reading.

It is okay if you are new to linux firewalls...

...but if a friend asked I would tell them just to google it, because you will probably be using google a lot to fill in the gaps and poor explanations anyway...

A decent amount of useful information, but the chapter on VPN is only a few pages and includes so little information it should have been a blurb in another chapter. The organization of the book is a headache, as some parts flow smoothly and a lot of other parts seem to be a mass of information copied from a manual. While reading this book I found many areas and details I needed to go online to clarify (and in many cases to fill in the gaps because many many useful tips and tricks are missing). I ended up just learning more from reading online than I did from this book, which is sad as I was hoping it would be a good, very detailed book about linux firewalls, when in fact it seemed as though it is a lot of poorly organized forum posts put together. There is good information in the book, but if I could get my money back still, I would.

Paul Freeman's Finest Book To Date

According to Wikipedia, 'Bondi is an eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia', but to photographer/artist Paul Freeman, Bondi is a resource for the models of his highly successful series of 'Bondi' male photography books. This volume, BONDI WORK' is, for this viewer, the finest of the series. Combining full page bleed color photographs with equally sophisticated black and white images, and interspersing these dramatic compositions with occasional two page spreads of snapshot size images that often create 'stories' simply by their placement on the page, makes for a large scale survey of the amazing Australian models Freeman finds and captures for us.

The theme here is 'work' and the settings are all in the various factories and workplaces in Bondi. The men are buff, but not distortedly so, and are presented both au natural and in elements of work clothing. For the most part these models appear very natural: no body shaving here, no need for oils and accoutrements - these are men in the raw, and enjoying themselves. The work theme matches the characters in this portfolio as these men all appear to be naturally buff from labor in the workplace (as well as the gym).

Freeman includes full frontal (and rear) nudity but only incidentally. This is not a collection of aroused models but rather a collection of men who can arouse the viewer merely by the gifts they possess! This is a fine collection for a very large audience. Not only are the models well chosen and well placed, but the photographs are also very high quality in composition and lighting and choice of setting. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 08

I am familar with Bondi's work, but I felt that this edition was by far his best work to date. Beautiful black and white picture of men set in work situations. I highly recommend this book.
