Practical Advice

25 Tips for Productivity is Augusto Pinaud's third book but first nonfiction book. However, it feels like he came home since it deals with productivity. I first became aware of Augusto through a productivity group. It didn't take long to realize that Augusto was not someone who theorizes about productivity; rather he is someone who has been there, done that and has the scars to prove it. I always have some nugget to take away after a visit with Augusto. That's why I was so excited to read his latest book. At last Augusto was putting his years of experience into a book.

The key takeaway of the book is you gain productivity by looking at ways to save minutes, not hours. The minutes add up. Specifically what I liked is that Augusto wrote a book for the 21st century. Even if you use a paper-based system, you likely use a computer at least for emails. Due to that your productivity can be impacted by problems with a computer. Augusto provides several tips on how to automate computer backups. Excellent example of evolution of productivity tips.

My top five favorite tips are:

#22 - Common sense is uncommon
#16 - Don't be afraid of the daily to do list
#14 - Have more than one of the things you constantly use
#9 - Always carry your reading material
#7 - Write down the key information - the key lists

I won't go into them in detail but rather encourage you to buy the book. Its a quick read but more importantly one that you will use as a reference tool. I find myself going back to it already.

I have become friends with Augusto over the last three years and could not be prouder of his accomplishments. He is amazingly generous with his knowledge and with this foray into non-fiction writing, I am looking forward to Augusto's next project.

Think highly of the man behind the book, but needs a good editor

I've been a listener to the GTD Virtual Study Group podcast for a while, and Mr Pinaud has top-notch ideas and insight when it comes to being productive (without getting all productivity-pr0n about it). The book did have some good tricks to try applying -- not as many were new to me as I'd hoped, maybe (probably because I listen to the podcast), but def some creative suggestions.

The main difficulty for me, as a reader, was the lack of editing; I found it interfered seriously with my ability to focus on the content. I do realize this is to be expected from a self-published book to some extent, as a professional editor is unlikely to be involved in the process. Still, I hope Mr Pinaud is able to get some support in editing his next one -- someone to address grammatical issues without killing his "voice" -- because it really does make a big difference to those of us consuming his work.

25 tips, simple, candid, productive with a touch of common sense. Good if you're in productivity because it gets you back to basics and great for a beginner, since it takes you to every day life examples in which we are reflected.

Quite fun, easy to read, understand and apply, productivity written by a productivist.

I have been waiting for this book fot quite a while; and let me tell you, it exceeded my expectations.

A must read for professionals engaged in complex sales

My perspective on this book comes from two dimensions; reading it and living it. I read the original book a number of years ago and have implemented Riefstahl's tactics and strategies with my own global teams with great success. I have also hired his firm to formally train and implement their methods with my teams and it has resulted in substantial improvements in our win rates. This new version of the book takes those ideas, modernizes them and takes them to an entirely new level. The truth is, there are no other books on the market that encompass what Riefstahl has done with this book.

Demo Crimes - These are the mistakes that people make when performing demos and Riefstahl is spot-on! He's not condescending in his description of the crimes but rather connecting. Not only does he talk about the mistake, he discusses what results you can expect when committing the demo crime and how to avoid the crime. I've seen some imitators come forward since his original book but none of them come close to Riefstahl's ability to get you moving in the right direction.

Discovery - I have led global teams at some of the largest software companies in the world (you know the names) and the disciplines needed to enforce discovery are finally taking place due to the impact that Riefstahl's firms (2WIN! Global) has had on the global software market. To perform any type of complex product demo without some form of discovery is absurd and Riefstahl does an excellent job of analyzing the different types of discoveries that take place today. Whether your discovery takes the shape of a telephone call, brief meeting or, in-depth multiple meetings, you will get ideas that will uncover exactly what you need to present, demo and discuss.

Demos - At the end of the day, that's why you're considering buying this book right? There is gold in this book for strategies and tactics for winning demos. For example, Riefstahl introduces the reader to the tactic of tell-show-tell whenever you demonstrate a feature in your software. As basic as that might sound, it's brilliant. Tell them what you are about to show them (and he offers a variety of ways of doing that), show them only what you told them you were going to show them and tell them what they saw in the form of a benefit! He discusses how a demo should be opened, why sometimes it makes sense to start a demo with what you believe your prospect will see as the most valuable feature whereas other times you hurt yourself by doing that. Whether your product presentation is 30 minutes or 3 days this book will give you ideas that will make you better.

Web Demos - I list this a separate category because let's face it, web demos are different! Regardless of your web demo/presentation platform (Webex, Adobe, GoToMeeting, etc.) Riefstahl provides strategies and tactics for leveraging this technology to the point of differentiation. How many web presentations have you seen that are so boring that you find yourself checking e-mail mid-way through? No longer!

Teamwork - For anyone who has team demos or presentations, you will now have a strategies and tactics that will have the prospect wondering why they would buy from anyone else. Riefstahl provides tactics you can immediately put to use across your team that are easy to implement and immediately impactful.

Bottom line? If you demonstrate or present any type of complex product, whether it is software or anything else, buy the book and act on Riefstahl's tactics and strategies. It will help you win more business.

Entertaining Dumb/Smart book. No, Really.

When I was reading Meg, co-workers kept asking me what it was about and I told them "It's about a big, prehistoric shark on the loose in the modern age." And they'd ask if it was good and I'd say"Sure, I'm learning alot about ocean trenches and sharks." Then they'd ask about the plot and I'd tell them that it was like reading an action movie jam packed with facts, like Hunt for Red October would have been if they'd put Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan on the sub with Sean Connery.
Meg is all about supersizing. Everything is big or state of the art. Everyone is at the top of their game, even the drunk Viet Nam Vet who pilots the helicopter and the little kid on the surf board. The subs and boats are all cutting edge or retro-fitted. There's even an uber shark tank.
Meg gets bonus points for coming up with a new way to finish off the climactic battle between Man and Beast.
In the opening notes, the author thanks Disney for their interest. Since the book's publication, Disney has held and dropped the film rights. It's too bad, because this is the Jerry Bruckheimer of shark books. If you see Michael Bay, tell him to get Nicholas Cage in to a wet suit and to get work.

A Swift Tale Of Action And Terror

"Meg" is a fun novel to read. It is full of almost non-stop action with just enough science to snag the tech-heads and just enough suspense for fans of mystery and horror. Alten knows just how far to go when describing the megalodon and uses just enough technical information to keep scientifically-inclined readers flipping through the pages.

The story is pretty basic. A scientist named Jonas Taylor runs into something in the Mariana Trench that scares him. So much so, that it costs the lives of the two Naval scientists with him. From that point on he becomes wary of the deep sea, but completely addicted to the study of Carcharodon megalodon, the prehistoric cousin of the great white shark. He swares that a megalodon lives in the Mariana Trench, but cannot prove it.

Ten years after his accident, Taylor is given another chance at the Mariana Trench. This time, he is asked to help out a friend hoping to recover damaged equipment deep within the trench. Taylor agrees to help, not without reservations. From this point on, the story picks up at a nail-biting pace that makes for a great read.

The description of the Meg and her vicious attacks are so vibrant that you can easily see them in your mind. It's obvious that much time and research was put into this novel by Alten. He gives the reader a clear view of everything. Even the least seaworthy reader can get a grip on what is happening the entire time.

"Meg" is also a great book to hand to your friends who might be a little bit slow to sit down and read a novel. This book's quick pace and fast action makes it an easy book to read. Hopefully, Alten's other books are just as great.

Highly recommended, especially to those who love fast-paced adventure.

One word of caution: This book is cover-to-cover blood and horror, especially for younger readers. Also, there is a little rough language, so parents might want to approve this before letting their teen read it.

A fast, thrilling ride...

Okay, so what if this book reads like a Jaws movie? It was still good, and the plot twists made it interesting. Not only that, it was a fast-paced read that had a lot of excitement. Needless to say, I enjoyed this book more than I'd expected to.
What did I like you ask? Well to begin with, the book started off with interesting events -- and interesting people -- and continued on in that same vein. The characters didn't have a whole lot of depth, but they had enough to carry this story through to the end. The interactions between the characters made for one subplot while the prehistoric shark made for another. Both were interesting.
The descriptions of under water surroundings was good enough to make me feel as if I were there worrying about pressurizing correctly as I ascended from the dark depths. And the action was so good that a few times I found myself holding my breath as I waited to hear what would happen next.
I'll admit that one predicament that a character found himself in makes you stretch your imagination almost to the breaking point, but it was darned interesting to see how he got himself out of that situation nonetheless.
If you're looking for a literary masterpiece, this "ain't" the book for you. If you're looking for a quick rush from an entertaining read, then this is it.

Clinical neurology, another great LANGE textbook

This is a easy to read short text on neurology. It covers all areas, but is not overly technical. This is a great book for general practioners to review neurology or medical students prepairing for boards. The topics are up to date and well referenced. The book has great pictures and diagrams, and follows the typical "LANGE" format. This is a great book to read quickly in one months time or during a clinical rotation.

This book of eight brief chapters on different aspects of the visual arts is designed to explore the nature of imagery and its relevance to many facets of our lives. Drawing on a wealth of examples from Western and non-Western art through the ages, it examines a wide range of themes, from the relationship between form and meaning, to the methodologies of art-historical analysis, to the controversies that have surrounded certain works of art both past and present.

The author's concise and clear analytical approach to understanding and appreciating works of art helps readers understand the various ways of interpreting images by artists as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, and Jackson Pollock. THE VISUAL ARTS affect our lives whether or not we ever set foot in a museum. Billboards use images to advertise products; pictures and sculptures stimulate our senses and decorate our urban and rural spaces. These, along with the buildings we inhabit, are manifestations of the visual arts.

This is a book of eight brief essays on different aspects of the visual arts. It is designed to engage readers with the nature of imagery and its relevance to their lives. Illustrations are drawn from Western and nonwestern art to give readers a range of the artistic possibilities in widely diverse societies.

Chapter 1 considers the universal appeal of images, while Chapter 2 addresses some of the culturally determined reasons for creating works of art. In Chapter 3, the relationship between form and meaning is surveyed, and Chapter 4 situates the artist in two kinds of context—prevailing aesthetic convention and practical training. The recurring formal theme of the circle, the column as a structural theme, and two iconographic themes—mother and child, and the artist's confrontation with death—are the subjects of Chapter 5.

When we view works of art today, we may not be seeing them in their original setting. In Chapter 6, therefore, we consider art in and out of the context intended by the artist. Since works of art have been analyzed from several different viewpoints, Chapter 7 introduces the major theoretical ways of interpreting imagery, focusing primarily on van Gogh's painting A Pair of Wooden Clogs. The final chapter challenges readers to come to grips with some of the controversies in which the visual arts have been involved.
