About the Author
Junji Ito debuted as a horror manga artist in 1987 with the first story in his successful Tomie series. Uzumaki, drawn from 1998 to 1999, was adapted into a live-action movie, which has been released in America by Viz Films and Tidepoint Pictures. It's influences include the classic manga artists Kazuo Umezu and Hideshi Hino, as well as authors Yasutaka Tsutsui and H.P. Lovecraft.

One of the best Horror comics ever!

I had read nearly all of Uzumaki before this deluxe edition was revealed, but I just had to have it. The book was shipped through Amazon and was actually fairly well packaged (No wrap though. If Amazon would at least take the time to wrap books in some sort of protective paper/bubble wrap it would make many customers VERY happy).

The cover is gorgeous, featuring spot gloss on the title and the blurb on the back cover. What makes this book even cooler are the full-color endpapers and that it is presented in traditional manga format (reads right to left). The book is a complete collection of ALL of the Uzumaki comics including the lost chapter Galaxies and a new comic afterword!
While I am unsure of how the binding will hold up (it looks to be a combination glued/sewn binding) I am overall extremely pleased with the treatment of the material. Granted I would have gone crazy over an Omnibus edition that could lay flat from any page, I know this is likely the closest we fans will come.

Given the fabulous frills added into this book (random color pages and color chapter pages, excellent cover, etc) I must highly suggest this book to anyone interested in supernaturally charged, mind (&body!) bending horror. Author Junji Ito weaves an incredible tale full of shocks, scares, false hope, and intensely horrific images of humanity in conflict with forces it cannot understand. Add to that a satisfying conclusion (no spoilers!) and you have one hell of a read.

Uzumaki is great, and this gorgeous hardcover collection is among my favorite books. It looks and feels as sexy as you would want a comic collection. All extra content from the previously released volumes are included. Sparse pages are beautifully painted in watercolor. I can't recommend it more than I would like to give it to you.

Ideal Product for Experiencing this Classic

Uzumaki is an unforgettable story that is amazing, disturbing, and unexpectedly thought-provoking. If you haven't read it already, buy this immediately.

By the length and open-close nature of the story, Uzumaki was in need of an omnibus. I'm sure there were omnibus iterations in the past but this the first I was aware of. Unlike many omnibus manga compilations, the book itself is not hastily put together with inconsistent gluing, paper-covers, and a flimsy back (I'm looking at you, Azumanga Daioh). The glue is consistent throughout all of the pages, the back is sturdy, and it's hardcover. It's built to last.

I give it 5/5 across all boards, and the price is irresistible. I'd expect to pay at least double for this quality.

extra: I read someone received a copy with a slightly dented spine, the one I received was as mint as it gets. The packaging I got with Amazon Prime was just Uzumaki in a box just big enough to hold the book. No bubble-wrap, no-nothing. I suppose this is kind of a hit-and-miss thing and isn't really a comment on the product itself.

Outstanding source of information and insight for those who seek a Spiritual Awakening.

Introduced to this book because it was on the 1940s "Reading List" For Doctor Bob's Akron AA group. I found this to be a remarkably informative book written by a highly respected Christian speaker of the 1930s. No words can describe how helpful I found this book. But my actions tell you what I believe: I have ordered 4 or 5 used copies and a couple new copies to "loan" to others. I expect most of the books will never come back; they will be passed on to others until they wear out.

My husband wanted several copies of this book to give to people, so that should be an indication that it is an excellent book. I am reading it and it is good, but you don't want to read it when you have other things on your mind. Not a light read, but is a good read! While I don't agree with everything Fox says, he doesn't beat around the bush about Christianity.

This volume, The Q Thomas Reader, contains a bit of history unknown to most about the origins of Christian documents. The book is in two sections: the first deals with the Q, or Sayings, gospel, a hypothesised document most likely shared by Matthew and Luke as a basis for their gospels, and the Gospel of Thomas, an early document popular in some Christian communities, but which did not get incorporated into the final Christian canon of any community surviving past the ancient period.
The Q (short for Quelle, German for 'source') does not come down to modern times in any direct documentary form. Rather, it is a document whose existence has been theoretically accepted as a likely source for material that is shared by Matthew and Luke, but which is not found in Mark. The first three canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, are called synoptic gospels, as they look at essentially the same events in the essentially the same way; Matthew and Luke both contain substantial parts of Mark (albeit with some revisions), and each contain original material, but the amount of material they share apart from the Markan material led scholars to believe there was another source (hence Quelle, source) they held in common. The introductory essay by Michael Steinhauser discusses this theory, as well as the method of reconstruction for Q. This is not without controversy, both in the theory and in the reconstruction, which the authors admit freely.
The translation of Q by John Kloppenborg is based upon his work 'Q Parallels', a new translation based upon Greek texts (so any particular English version may not agree with the translations here). Q is set out in both Matthew and Luke frameworks; the boldface shows verbatim agreements between the two in the Greek text, with various other notations used to show the differences. Where these refer to Mark or other scriptural texts, this is also noted.
The Gospel of Thomas is set out in a dual language format. Consisting of 114 verses or so (the division of books of the Bible into chapter and verse did not come until the latter half of Christian history - a thousand years passed between the formation of the canon and the insertion of chapter and verse numbers), the book was found as part of the Nag Hammadi library (which consists of many books and book fragments from the ancient days of Christianity that never made it to the official canon). Like many non-canonical gospels, the Gospel of Thomas is more a collection of sayings (like Q) rather than a narrative story (like the four canonical gospels in the Bible).
The Greek text here is presented comes from the Nag Hammadi library, with a new translation by Marvin Meyer presented beside. Following this text is a collection of translated pieces from the Oxyrhynchus fragments, which also contain pieces of the Gospel of Thomas (and were discovered as documents half a century prior to the Nag Hammadi discovery, but were not identified until after the Nag Hammadi pieces were published).
An introductory essay by Stephen Patterson introduces the Gospel of Thomas in similar fashion to Q; historical placement, discovery, linguistic and theological issues are explored, particularly the relationship between Thomas and the other schools of thought that made progress through early Christianity.
This book presents a fascinating introduction to some alternative theories and readings, and shows the diversity of opinion about Jesus in the early church. Two texts at the heart of today's quest for the real Jesus

Anyone who knows anything about the Jesus Seminar (and other recent questers for the historical Jesus) will know that the hypothetical Q and the Coptic Gospel of Thomas are highly prized sources. The highest proportion of "red" and "pink" (authentic) sayings of Jesus appears in the intersection of Q and Thomas, with the idea that sayings that appear in both of these sources must be old. This book by Polebridge Press (the publishers of the Jesus Seminar) presents in readily accessible form these two sources. The "Q" source is thought to be the second document used by Matthew and Luke (in addition to the Gospel of Mark), and so Q is presented in the forms of parallel passages in Matthew and Luke (as we don't have any manuscripts of Q). The Gospel of Thomas is extant in three Greek fragments and a complete Coptic version, so this book includes an English translation and the original Coptic text on the facing page. An appendix shows the parallels between Q and Thomas. There is an introduction of about 25 pages for Q, and an introduction of about 50 pages for the Gospel of Thomas. Anyone who is interested in ancient material on Jesus will find this book to be a useful presentation of the sources.

However, the high and persistent degree of macroeconomic disparity within the EU and the absence of an optimum currency area has led to new calls for examining policy coordination.

This book adopts an institutional perspective, exploring the incentives for policymakers that result from coordination mechanisms in the fields of fiscal, monetary and wage policy. Based on the concept of externalities, the work examines cross-border spillovers (e.g. induced by fiscal policy) and cross-policy spillovers (e.g. between fiscal and monetary policies), illuminating how they have empirically changed over time and how they have been addressed by policymakers. Steinbach introduces a useful classification scheme that distinguishes between vertical and horizontal coordination as well as between cross-border and cross-policy coordination. The author discusses farther-reaching forms of fiscal coordination (e.g. debt limits, insolvency proceedings, Eurobonds) with special attention to how principals of state organization affect their viability. Federal states and Bundesstaaten differ in the incentives they offer for debt accumulation – and thus in their suitability for fiscal coordination.

Steinbach finds that the originally strict separation between policy areas has undergone significant change during the debt crisis. Indeed, recent efforts to coordinate policy are no longer limited to one policy area, but now extend to several areas. Steinbach argues that further fiscal policy coordination can be effectively deployed to address policy externalities, but that the coordination mechanisms used must match the form of state organization in the first place. Regarding wage policies, there are significant barriers to coordination. Notwithstanding some empirical successes in the implementation of a productivity-oriented wage policy, the high heterogeneity of national wage-setting institutions is likely to prevent any wage coordination.

Armin Steinbach is an economist and lawyer at the German Ministry of Economics in Berlin, Germany. He is the author of books on economic policy and has published in academic journals such as the Journal of International Economic Law, Columbia Journal of European Law and American Review of International Arbitration. He held visiting scholar positions at Harvard and Oxford University and received a doctorate in law from University of Munich and a doctorate in economics from University of Erfurt in Germany.

I got the idea of an HIV-positive person wanting to spread the virus when I was reading an article about how some children had the virus due to mother-to-child transmission. I wondered how they felt: angry or depressed? I was certain they would be socially marginalized; even they had done nothing wrong.

That idea mushroomed into something bigger: the fight for fairness. Eventually, I called my manager and told her that I was going to write something very different; that it might compromise sales as my readers, who are used to my romance or family novels, might not be comfortable with the subject matter. My manager said, "You're the author. You're calling me to inform, not to seek for permission." That made sense; I think I have a great idea, I like to write it and I don't care about sales. So I wrote it. As expected, even after so many years, the sales of this book is not as good as my other books.

Nevertheless, I did not regret, for the effort I have put into this book is intense. While writing the book, I was serving my two-year mandatory national service as a soldier (every male Singaporean has to go through it), and as in any organization, there is unfairness. I remember all the emotions and dissociate into an angry man, just so to reduplicate the emotions in the story.

The result is Lilith--the story about two people who desire to be hunters. Both seek to end something; both are angry; both are obsessed with their goals. This is so different from my other books that some of my readers, upon buying it, give it to their friends. They still prefer my other books.

However, I still believe this is one of my better books; not in terms of sales, but in terms of my personal preference.

You may read only read once to understand the story, but to truly appreciate the subtext, you'll want to read twice to connect the dots. You won't however regret reading it twice.

Not wanting to provide any spoilers, this thin, dark tale tells the story of a Chinese woman who is HIV-positive due to parent-to-child transmission. Sadly, she is rejected and marginalized by her community. Teachers wouldn't teach her, her classmates sat far away from her, and even servers refused to serve her. Hell breaks loose when her boyfriend, who did not know about her HIV status prior, decides to leave her.

The premise seems simple and dark, but in my second read, I realize it's actually more than that. It's a scary reminder that things are not always so simple. Low Kay is NOT focusing on how dreadful the virus is, but how dreadful society is. The twist at the ending portrays everything with one sentence.

I recommend this to everyone - just read it twice instead before judging it.

A very dark tale

I am pretty surprised that a twenty-something can write a story with such a dark theme. Though it lacks good language and figurative elements, the theme overshadows all the shortcomings.

The story starts simple, with Stella (later renaming herself Lilith) seducing men and then telling them that she has HIV after they have sex. As the author delves into the protagonist, I begin to feel the protagonist's anger and motivations. Her first boyfriend ditched her after thinking that she is HIV, and even waiters refuse to serve food to her, in fear of contamination. It's precisely this very reason that Stella loses hope in humanity.

The ending is shocking, and without the twist, the story would have just gotten a simple three stars. With one sentence, the author changes everything, and makes a dark story even darker.

Highly recommended. However, it would be nice if the author had explained the anomalies pertaining to the writing style. Many words are misspelled for some reason, and readers should have been informed prior to reading it. I only know the reason halfway through the book (the narrator is a dyslexic).

Lilith tells a dark tale about a woman who is facing injustice since her birth. When Lilith was born, she was deemed to be HIV positive, and everyone avoided her like a plague. Eventually, she could no longer control her anger and began spreading the virus by seducing man.

The beginning of the story is much like a hunting game, with Lilith searching for her prey and a man determined to find her for destroying his brother's life. I would recommend this book only because of what happened at the later part of the story, when the motives of the characters are disclosed. The twist at the end literally leaves me dumbfounded. Is Lilith spreading the virus, or the stigma? It is a book that can be read in an hour, and it is a book that makes us wonder: how much injustice can one carry? You'll have to read twice to understand some of the weird writing style, like the reasons for the words' spelling and Lilith's weird habits. Thumbs-up to Low Kay for this amazing book.

Robert Hirsch is a photographer, writer, curator, and the director of Light Research (lightresearch.net). His books include: Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age, Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography, Photographic Possibilities: The Expressive Use of Equipment, Ideas, Materials, and Processes, and Transformational Imagemaking: Handmade Photography Since 1960. A Tool for Artists

Every time I pick up this book, it surprises me. The depth and range of information contained within this volume is breathtaking. It is hard to imagine a more complete work on how color functions in photography; anything more and the book would weigh over 300 pounds! Whether you work digitally or chemically, you will find valuable information within its pages – and a huge source of inspiration.

Robert Hirsch has made a significant contribution to the world of photography with his books, including his classic "Seizing the Light: A Social History of Photography." His book "Transformational Imagemaking" rewrites the history of photography by bringing to light decades of work and artists not covered in traditional narratives. This book follows in that tradition by going beyond what other books provide.

"Exploring Color Photography" is for those who believe that true art and creativity comes from more than know what button to button to push (there are already plenty of books on that). Art comes from your head and your heart – and this book is designed to help you to see and think like an artist.

Color is an immensely complicated subject. This book breaks down the topics into easily grasped chapters - but always with an eye to how an artist can use this information. Even the technical sections become invitations to explore creative possibilities. Throughout the book are many sidebars on "problem solving" that cover key concepts in understanding color as well as technical challenges you might encounter. An excellent book, with a lot of artistically useful information.

This book is a great reference and resource for professional artists, and photographers that truly care about the quality and presentation (and longevity!) of their work. While this is a textbook, and not a quick read with a few little tips like so many of the photo books being published today, that's a plus, and not a minus. There is a lot of excellent content in Hirsch's book that is missing in a lot of quick 'how to' and introductory books. Color theory, how to get the longest-lasting prints, some information on film (yes, some people still shoot it), and a lot of artistic theory and suggestions on how to make the best images possible. Nothing in the book is likely to go out of date soon. It's not showing how to do things in a specific software program, and doesn't really discuss camera settings. It discusses photography as an art, and does a good job of it. This is a resource I've found myself coming back to over the past year that I've had the book (note: I was provided a copy in exchange for a review), and though I consider myself fairly well-versed in the basics of photography, always manage to pick up something new that makes me a better photographer. I'm glad this book exists.

Artistic Color Interpretation

EXPLORING COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY is very in-depth writing. The first chapter Color Photography Concepts is fairly scientific, the second chapter is A Concise History of Color Photography which did not interest me. After that the book is very informative, stimulating and well worth reading. Or can easily be used as a go to guide for many subjects.

The author covers many subjects leaning toward the art of color, rather than just the basics of how to shoot. He discusses Seeing the Light and the Language of Color, color strategies and interactions. At 370+ (8.5"x11") pages there is a lot of information here. The book would be best utilized by students of art photography. It is fairly technical in it's writing and very comprehensive. It is very well written and edited. I would especially recommend it for photographers interested in artistic rendition in their work.
