About the Author

Dr. Ioanna Palaiologou CPsychol AFBPsS is an Associate at the Institute of Education, University College London, Centre for Leadership in Learning. Ioanna has worked as a university academic in the UK for the last 20 years and is now returning to her career as a child psychologist.  She is a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society with specialism on child development and learning theories and was appointed as Associate Fellow of BPS this year.  Currently she is the Co-Director of Canterbury Educational Services and Head of Children’s Services in the same company.

 

Whilst completing her PhD Ioanna worked both as a researcher in education and lecturer on Education and Early Childhood Studies in UK universities.  In 2004 she joined the University of Hull and during the next nine years she worked as Programme Director of BA (Hons) Educational Studies, Co-ordinator of Early Childhood Studies provision, Course Leader for the Masters in Early Childhood Studies and Academic Coordinator for Research Students Support within the Faculty of Education. Her most recent post in higher education was with Canterbury Christ Church University from January, 2014 where she remains as an Associate Doctoral Supervisor.

 

She joined BESA in 2005. She is a member of the Executive and has been the Chair in 2011-2012. Currently she is the Treasurer of the association.

The fly in the ointment is the hotel's owner, Garrett's old chum and Tres' nemesis, Alex Huff. Actually, there are two flies in the ointment. The second is a series of mysterious goings-on that Garrett thinks Tres may be able to unravel. They have hardly arrived when a Texas lawman of the take-em-out-to-the-chapparal-and-let-em-try-to-get-away school is murdered, and the desk clerk goes missing. Naturally, a supposedly harmless tropical depression morphs into a Category 4 storm, and the hunt for the murderer is complicated still further. Riordan's strong narrative voice, reminiscent of Randy Wayne White and James Lee Burke, is alive and well in this thriller, as he attempts to enlarge the genre by going back to something the early Dashiell Hammett might have tried. Not up to Riordan's usual standards

Let me preface this with "this is still a good read"... Having said that, I was rather disappointed in this book overall. As the 7th book in a series, it should have a much tighter plot and story line. This read like the 1st novel of a series. The scenes jumped between (too many) viewpoints. There were far too many characters introduced who didn't really further the plot. If I had to guess, I'd say this was one of the author's earlier attempts at writing that he re-edited to bring it to "present day".

I had this figured out a third of the way through.
This books was a re-do of every tired Agatha Christie "locked up together" plot you've ever read. I expected more of Riordan.
The only thing missing was a poison gas pinata.
Really disspointing.

Tres Is Back But Something Or Someone Important Is Missing

I have been reading Riordan's Tres Navarre novels since the publication of "Big Red Tequila". Obviously, I like them enough to remain interested but after reading "Rebel Island", I have concluded that I miss some things from the past. I miss Tres' wicked almost irreverent sense of humor and wise cracking that was so prevalent in "Big Red Tequila" but has since become less and less visible. And I clearly miss Ralph Arguello whose absence leaves a huge void in the psychological and moral development of the novels.

In "Rebel Island", Tres, his wife, Maia, and brother, Garrett , are trapped in a dilapidated hotel by a powerful hurricane. It is a classic "we're trapped in this place and one of us is a murderer" story that quickly prompts us to start imagining who each character might "really" be in order to guess the ending. Along the way we get mysteries from the past interlocked with the mysteries of today. We also get an old hotel blown apart, hidden passageways, mysteries in an old lighthouse, red herrings, and, of course, trapped guests who are never who they claim to be.

While the mystery was entertaining enough, it never really grabbed me...I never reached that "gosh, I can't wait to turn the page feeling". Maybe this was due to the failure of Riordan to fully evolve the characters--I just didn't care about them. Some come and go so quickly only to resurface later that you need a score sheet handy.

I will stick with Tres Navarre a bit longer but I find the things I miss overriding the things that are left. For example, is anyone else getting tired of Garrett's schtick? He adds little beyond exasperation to the storylines and I'd gladly trade 2 Garretts for one Ralph.

The idea of total war--meaning war waged against a whole people, rather than merely its army--didn't start with bombing raids during the Second World War. Nor did it begin with Sherman's march to the sea. Instead, it dates to the beginning of recorded history itself. "All the characteristics of modern war--the blurring of the line between battlefield and society, the engulfing of women and children in the violence of war, the destruction of society's infrastructure, the uprooting of entire populations--were anticipated in ancient siege warfare," writes author Paul Bentley Kern. This fascinating book begins by describing the theory of siege warfare and its engineering, but focuses mainly on its historical practice from biblical times through the Roman period. Kern shows that besieging fortifications was mainly a technical problem that put warriors on the sidelines. When the problem was solved, however, "the assaulting troops found themselves not on a conventional field of battle opposed by an army but in a maze of streets and buildings opposed by an entire population," writes Kern. "Often they were under orders to sack the city, one of the few circumstances in which military commanders countenanced indiscriminate violence." Kern does not shy away from this uncomfortable fact, and actually focuses on the special plight of women and children: "Their presence threatened the notion of war as a contest between warriors, undermined the conventional standards of honor and prowess that governed ancient warfare, and paradoxically made war less restrained by creating a morally chaotic cityscape in which not only the walls collapsed but deeply rooted social and moral distinctions as well." A Good Overview of Siege Warfare

So little has been written about ancient siege techniques that I was immediately intrigued when I first saw this book. After reading it I must profess that I enjoyed it immensely. It is at times plodding and repetitive, however it does an excellent job of emphasizing the importance of siege warfare in the ancient world. I find that I now have a much deeper appreciation of what was required to take or protect a city in ancient days.
This book provides a good overview of the developments of siege tactics throughout ancient history. Most of the subject matter deals with empires or peoples near the Mediterranean. The author does a good job of organizing the available sources to back up his discussions of different cultures, sieges, etc. At times he does attempt to expand on the sources and usually his opinions are logical interpretations. An added bonus is his bibliography which is an excellent source of references for continued research if desired.
All in all I found this book to be very interesting. It handles a lot of subject matter in detail that is usually passed over or severely summarized by military historians. Even a seasoned military historian will find that he has learned something from this book. It brings a surprising level of humanity to ancient warfare. However, one thing I do wish the book had was a chapter that went in depth into the design and manufacture of the different siege machinery. This is touched on but not nearly enough.

Interesting & Detailed Account of Ancient Siege Warfare

After I finished reading this book I was not too sure how I felt, I was a bit ambivalent about how good or bad it was. At times I found it hard going to continue but then it picked up with a very interesting account of some particular siege or battle. However other times I felt it was becoming repetitive, the same story with variations on the number of dead or the way the victors tortured or killed their enemies. There is no doubt that the author has thoroughly researched the subject but the narrative came across a bit dry in the end. The chapters on the Roman army's conduct of siege operations stand out. There were a number of line drawings and maps but I found the maps to be of poor quality, I'm sure better ones could have been found. If you are looking for a detailed account of how siege operations were carried out in ancient times and the result of those sieges then this is the book for you. I can only say that I did not find the narrative as free flowing as I usually like in a book, it was almost like reading a school text book at times. I would recommend this book only for those who have a keen interest in the subject matter.

About the Author
In a career that spanned more than four decades, Dr. Edwin S. Shneidman was the chief of the first national suicide prevention program, at the National Institute of Mental Health; founded the American Association of Suicidology; and was the first professor of thanatology (the study of death) at the University of California, Los Angeles. Until Dr. Shneidman took up the study of suicide shortly after World War II, the subject had received little sustained attention from researchers or clinicians. But as a researcher, theoretician, lecturer and author and editor of a dozen books, he helped establish the study of suicide as an interdisciplinary field and devised many concepts now widely accepted.

Once again I'm writing here a review of one of the most experts in suicidology - Shneidman, Edwin, Ph.D. Dr. Shneidman, the father of Suicidology is the right person write about the defintion of suicide. It is a valuable resource for both students and professional in the mental health area. As Litman, M.D. said - "...this is an epic book of scholarship...", and it surely is. From the characteristics of suicide to an historical view, and a most educational book, I would say that this masterpeace is unique in its scope and content and with no doubt worth reading.

About the Author
John Mangan is Director of the University of Hull Logistics Institute where he also holds the Peter Thompson Chair in Logistics. A native of Ireland, he holds the following qualifications: BSc (National University of Ireland), Higher Diploma (Maynooth University, Ireland), MA (Lancaster University, UK), MSc (Cranfield University, UK), and PhD (Cardiff University, UK). Prior to entering academia, he worked in Aer Lingus (the Irish national airline) and in the Irish Civil Service. John's teaching and research is largely focused in two areas: global and maritime logistics, and management development in logistics and supply chain management (SCM. Prior to his appointment at Hull, John lectured first at University college Dublin, Ireland, and then at the trinity IMI Graduate School of Management in Dublin, Ireland. He also spent time as Fulbright Scholar at Boston College, USA. In addition to his current teaching and research commitments at the University of Hull, John also regularly teaches operations and logistics on University of Hull MBA programmes in both the Middle East and Asia.

Chandra Lalwani is Professor of Supply Chain Management and Director of the centre for Logistics Research at the University of Hull Logistics Institute. He holds a BEng in Electrical Engineering, an MEng in Control Systems and another MEng in Systems Engineering. He obtained his PhD from the University of Wales in 1978 based on his research on the dynamic modelling of commodity flow systems. Prior to joining the University of Hull he taught at Cardiff University Business School and was responsible for doctoral research in logistics and operations management. Professor Lalwani was a Deputy Director and Co-investigator at Cardiff Business School on the Cardiff University Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre, and Principal Investigator on one of its three flagship research projects on sustainable logistics. Chandra's teaching and research focus is in supply chain management, retail logistics, logistics and transport modelling, and integration of transport in supply chains. With his research in transport in supply chains, he has worked closely with the retail and distribution industry in the UK.

Tim Butcher is Lecturer in Operations and Project Management at the University of Hull Logistics Institute where he is the MSc Logistics and Supply Chain Management Programme Director. He holds the following qualifications: BEng(Hons) (University of Liverpool, UK) MSc (Cranfield University, UK), and EngD (Cranfield University, UK). Prior to entering academia, he completed a technical engineering apprenticeship and worked as a maintainability engineer for Westland Helicopters. Tim's teaching and research is largely focused in two areas: human factors and new technologies in logistics and SCM. In addition to his current teaching and research commitments at the University of Hull, Tim also regularly teaches project management on University of Hull MBA programmes in the Middle East.

Suitable

It's an OK book but would have like to review a few pages before. It sounds like it's from a foreign country just by the verbage. This industry is important to our economy and a clear understanding of it for students interested in entering this field requires an American text with global information. This is good for getting a little look into it. Going more current is better.

Good book from the theorists perspective but not a book that will help you learn and apply in practical situations.

Mr. Saaty appears to be gifted in this area and his development of the topics is clear and concise.

Initially gave three stars but changed to four since I am rating the book on content only (using other books for practice).

The Background of OR

This book is unlike Thomas L. Saaty's other books. It is readable. It broadly covers a variety of topics in Operation Research. The topics are fundamental to OR. I did not read the book straight through, but did read several chapters which interested me. In the last couple of chapters he philosophizes about the use of OR. Since the book was written several years ago, I will let the present practicioners of OR decide whether he was right or not.
