SUN SPLASHED RASCALS

A witty,light hearted and very energetic collection of crisp graphite drawings celebrating the sexy good times of the classic all-american, fresh faced lad. Mr.Bush's lush color pencil drawing mixes anatomical accuracy with bold cartoony touches brilliantly. His masterful rendering skills carves every muscle tone lovingly, obsessively etching and shading the biceps,deltoids, six pack and obliques to sheer perfection.Further more, Mr. Bush's sharp eye for only the most masculine young hunks playing out the classic 'boys will be boys' fantasy makes for a very unique and instantly recognizable body of work. The sun splashed settings and the happy go lucky attitude of his subjects gives the work a light and innocent spark. This unique approach clearly separates Mr. Bush's drawings from the two basic catagories that seems to dominate most contemporary homo-erotic art: the all too familiar gritty-piggy-sleaze (yawn) or the ridiculously glossy,extremely femme muscle queens(yuck). Mr. Bush worked from the 60's through the 80's and captured the mood of contemporary manhood in each era.His hilariously cute tongue-in-cheek narratives on many of the star boy toys from the 70's and 80's television and movies makes very clear just how popular the man-boy fantasy has been in American mass media. And considering the dark undertones of the artist's personal life, it's fascinating how bright and optimistic the mood of the work is. Mr. Bush's work shares the same enthusiasm for frisky teens as those depicted in the infamous catalogues that mr. Bruce Weber shot for Abercrombie and Fitch, which were soon banned for too much joyful nudity (courtesy of some joy starved censors). Marky Mark's sexy, cool persona in those sizzling Calvin Klein ads also comes to mind. God bless those incorrigible rascals..long may they rule (yeah)!

A must-have for any lover of the drawn male form.

I saw this book at a small bookstore and I bought it without hesitation. I didn't have to look inside, because I knew it didn't matter. It would be great no matter what. After seeing snippets of Mr. Bush's work online and in magazines, a monograph of his work has been on my mental wish list for years. As a child growing up reading comics, interested in art, and gay, I've always been taken with the precision and perfection exhibited in Harry's drawings. His art is somewhat hard to describe. The care and time put in to each drawing suggests painstaking realism, which causes the viewer to overlook some of the blatant exaggerations in the subjects' superhung endowment. Compared to Tom of Finland's work, which is too cartoony for my taste, Harry portrays a realistically exaggerated world of beautiful characters in the throes of budding manhood. The drawings are both erotic and fun, in addition to interesting to study as art. The almost all pencil-drawn pieces are crystal clear, with great care given to line weight and shading. The reproductions of the original pieces are very well done in the book, capturing little nuances like the texture of the paper they were drawn on, and notes Harry wrote to himself while drawing them.

I could write for days about this book, but in short I'd like to thank the authors for releasing it. Based on the story of Harry's life and attitude, it seems it is nearly a miracle that the drawings still exist for the world to enjoy.

As a college student in my early 20's, I never experienced gay culture before Stonewall; before AIDS. The art in this book portrays a care-free fun attitude throughout the '60's and '70's that I wish still existed. Even if it never really existed that way, Mr. Bush did a good job of making the fantasy as real as it could be.

Harry Bush was (is) clearly one of the great American illustrators, and this collection of images is a brilliant testament to his courage as a gay man in a gay-unfriendly world! The images are not only titilating, but each conveys a sense of humor and charm that would make virtually any adult observer feel at ease. More Than Just Dams and Salmon

At first glance, "Finding the River" seems to be about dams and salmon and an oddly specific river in the Pacific Northwest.

However, author Jeff Crane peels back the many layers surrounding the recent removal of the Elwah and Glines Canyon dams which have starved the river of its salmon for decades. Crane uses this topic as a jumping off point for a larger discussion involving the native Klallam Indian culture, the nature and evolution of environmental discourse in America, the role of state and federal government in environmentalism, and what the restoration of the Elwah river means in a larger context of a nationwide environmental movement. Each one of these topics, Crane handles with care and is very aware of the scholarship that came before him (I say this with in mind the first chapter over the Klallam Indians and his treatment of Richard White in his conclusion).

Through his meticulous and careful writing, Crane successfully infuses the topics of river restoration and environmentalism with subtlety and nuance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read William Cronen's "Changes in the Land" or anyone who is interested in environmental history or ecology.

River of Meaning

This book offers a narrative of the Elwha, to most of us a little known river that runs through the Olympia National Park in Washington State, focusing on the battles that have been fought over the last one-hundred and fifty years to first harness its potential power and, more recently, to attempt to restore the river to its original purpose. The work is surprisingly timely, given that the author could not have known when he began the project that the two major dams on the Elwha would finally come down in 2011 after decades of struggle. But the story of how this came about, the various factions that collided and the many different peoples and natural resources affected by its history is fascinating and instructive with implications for communities throughout the US. Crane builds a narrative that includes the Klallam Natives who continue to claim the land and the resources of the river as their special provenance, nineteenth-century entrepreneurs and progressives who viewed the river as an "organic machine," early environmental movement leaders, factory mill operators and their blue collar employees, and not least of all, the salmon themselves who depend upon the natural flow of the river to maintain their complex spawning cycles. Given that this is an environmental history, it should come as little surprise that Crane stands in support of the river restoration project, but his balanced portrayal of the various parties involved will be illuminating to anyone concerned about the question of hydro-electric dams and their impact on the land. I was surprised to learn just how far back some of these battles go. While entrepreneurial visionaries like Thomas Aldwell typically saw "the wilderness as a barrier to progress" and promoted hydro-electric power as a kind of utopian program to boost economic opportunity across the board, Crane informs us that laws protecting salmon runs were already in place as early as the 1890's. Then as now, however, such laws and concerns were often outmatched by the powerful conglomeration of interests in favor of constructing the dams. Over the decades honest attempts were made by the Corps of Engineers and others to protect the salmon by providing hatcheries, constructing fish ladders, and through other various means. I am old enough to recall how the fish ladders in particular were touted in elementary school classrooms as something of an ingenuous technological compromise, but Crane's research reveals the complexities of such claims and the ultimate failure of these innovations to actually rejuvenate the salmon runs. The story of the Elwha is never a simple one, however, and Crane scrupulously documents the surprising victories, failures and assorted complex alliances that make up such a history. In the end, this book unravels many of the typical stereotypes that would simply pit soulless corporate moguls against nature-worshipping tree-huggers. As Crane notes, "the campaign to remove the Elwha dams incorporated environmental and economic arguments, a creative solution, and determination to build consensus in support of restoration." This is an enjoyable, at times lyrical, and always interesting bit of historical investigation that marries historical rigor with regional interest,narrative momentum and professional passion. Ultimately it asks us to consider what is the meaning of a river and, by extension, how we will proceed in finding a balance between nature and industry and managing the limited resources that sustain us on this planet.

Great For What It Did - Dissapointing For What It Promised

Over the last decade there has been a bit of negligence within the historical community when titling publications. This under-sight often extends to the introductions of books which outline more subject matter than the authors actually intend on investigating. Jeff Crane's Finding the River: An Environmental History of the Elwha unfortunately maintains this unfortunate pattern. Crane has not written an environmental history rather, he has written a socio-economic history of the Elwha and the public policy surrounding the river for the last one hundred years (and quite thoroughly at that). Early on in the book Crane promises to address deep philosophical questions about habitat restoration and cultural continuity as well as how the Elwha story reveals "the role of nature" in our lives. Crane explains, "Many Americans struggle to understand and negotiate the role of nature in their lives. The story of the Elwha River reveals a great deal about this relationship..." Finding the River does not adequately address these questions and assertions.

The Elwha River is located in the northern reaches of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula and flows through Olympic National Park before emptying into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was the location of two treaty-defying dam projects which transcended decades, were an engineering blunder, and ultimately failed to deliver on their promises to the public and politicians who lobbied for them. After much debate, the decision was made, with federal support, to deconstruct the two technologically obsolete dams. If this were the intended scope of the book, it would be complete and resolved in its mission. However, Crane endeavored to incorporate the more abstract and sometimes scientific themes of environmental history which lead to noticeable imbalances within the book.

To write a complete environmental history of any area, one must provide meaningful ecological and geological insights throughout the text. Crane reserves the first 8-10 pages for such a history covering the 3+ million year story before throwing in Natives and never mentioning the environment again in a meaningful and exploratory way. Of course it is not necessary to include a detailed biotic and geologic record of the Elwha region; however, by treating such a record as a mandatory introduction for an environmental history book and nothing more, he has separated the natural history from the human history. This does not at all maintain his claim that the Elwha can reveal to the readers "the role of nature in their lives." In fact it achieves the contrary.

Crane proceeds to provide excellent insights on the Klallam people who were the last Elwha residents before the white settlers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Crane draws from intriguing primary sources as reported from early explorers as well as a variety of secondary documents to illustrate an organized portrait of pre-contact Puget Sound riparian lifestyle. Crane employs meticulous citation when describing the lifestyle and practices of the Klallam people, but when he concludes the topic he insists that the Klallam people probably valued the river "for its beauty and clean water" and insists that the Klallam worldview was one where "nature was not commodified...While it is anachronistic to portray Indian peoples environmentalists in modern terms (there are many examples of Indian peoples damaging ecosystems and certain species like beaver during the beaver fur trade), in the case of the Klallam, we see a system of use and respect that worked..." Crane offers no citation or example to reinforce this grass roots idea. Instead he moves on to commit one of his most significant blunders in the book.

In order to reinforce his idea of the ecologically mindful Indian, Crane draws from Joseph Taylor's book, Making Salmon. Crane accurately notes Taylor's effort to explain the massive salmon harvest carried out by the Pacific Northwest Indians. These harvests were extensive and supported a large native population. According to Crane, Taylor explained that through ceremonial practices Indians self-regulated themselves into being unconsciously ecologically minded, and therefore they never depleted the salmon runs to their current pathetic state. However, Taylor's intentions behind Making Salmon were more concerned with the causes of the decline and the futile efforts of fish culturists to offset the drooping salmon run statistics. Taylor concludes that natives of the Pacific Northwest harvested an enormous amount salmon (perhaps as much as peek industrial harvests) and that no such ecologically minded constraints existed. Taylor uses a library of statistics to prove that salmon declines are due to, in sum, habitat loss.

In his introduction, Crane promised meaningful environmental philosophy on the subject of the Elwha but ultimately handles the topic by a few John Muir and William Cronon quotes and a few distant associations to the Hetch-Hetchy controversy of the early twentieth century.

However, as mention above, Crane has produced an excellent, and I mean excellent, hundred year account of the Elwha controversy placed in a political, social, and economical background. This was the book's strength, and if the reader is searching that sort of insight, then I highly recommend Finding the River. I would furthermore recommend that the reader skip the introduction and chapter 1 in order to not set up false hope in the promises and assertions posited in the early pages of the book.

A great review

This is not a workbook for the novice. It assumes a pretty good prior knowledge of the language. I have two years of high school Spanish and two years of college Spanish, and it is very challenging for me, especially the vocabulary. Excellent review workbook, however, with all of the vocabulary in the back of the book. If you want the answers to the exercises, however, you need to order them from the publisher.

How to understand people better than they understand themselves!!!

"As the only one of its type, this program [or system outlined in this book] offers a complete, practical, easy-to-use system that you can use to measure a person's thoughts and feelings quickly, at any time."

The above quotation is found in the introduction of this fascinating book by Dr. David J. Lieberman, author and "internationally recognized leader" of human behavior and interpersonal relationships.

Be aware that the system in this book is not about reading someone based on their body language, their speech pattern, or how they dress. It is not about developing some mystical power such as telepathy. Instead, this book contains specific and proven psychological techniques that can be instantly applied to any person in almost any situation.

Is this system absolutely foolproof? Of course not. No system is. But you will gain a "statistical advantage" to reading a person by using the methods in this book.

The book itself is divided into two sections:

Section one (7 chapters) has techniques that will give you much insight into people, and will help you gain the advantage in practically every situation. Each chapter in this section is based on seven basic questions. These questions are as follows:

(1) Is this person hiding anything? (2) Does the person like or not like someone or something? (3) Is the person really confident or just attempting to play it cool? (4) How is a person really feeling? (5) Is the person really interested or are you just wasting your time? (6) Whose side is a person really on? (7) How safe, stable, and sane is a person...really?

Section two (8 chapters), my favorite section, actually goes beyond the basic techniques of section one thus giving you the ability to "peer into someone's mind to find out what [that person] is [really] thinking" and enables you to "understand a person better [than they] understand [themselves]."

Don't worry!! Lieberman gives plenty of real-world examples so you'll never be lost.

The system in this book allows you to gain much insight into a person's thinking and psyche without having to spend much time with that person. As Lieberman says,

"Once you become...familiar...with what to look for and what to listen to, your ability to read a person will become almost instinctual."

Finally, a fun feature of this book is that Lieberman provides an interesting quotation from others at the beginning of each chapter. Here are two of my favorites:

"Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." (Comedian George Carlin)

"Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open." (E. G. Letterman)

In conclusion, besides giving you an effective way of reading people, this book, as well, will most certainly give you a better understanding of human nature and thus more insight into yourself!!!

One of the top 10 self help books ever!

I have never reviewed a book before but I am so struck and disturbed by the cattiness and vindictiveness of Jen's "review" of a book, she admits to never reading,that I am writing my first one.

I am a lover of self help books. Name the big ones and I own it. I have read most of Lieberman's books and found them to be fast paced, insightful and easy to read. This book struck me as different because of the depth. The first part is cool techniques on how to read people and examples that make it usable and very relatable. I thought the part about how people use pronouns to distance themselves from events to be brilliant ( see page 34) Here is where I felt this book was different - the last couple of chapters were especially insightful and deep. It helped me to understand how self esteem colors the way we see the world. It helped me to understand what motivates people at the core and helped me to understand what motivates me. This is truly a OUTSTANDING book. One of the top 10 self help books that I have ever read.

Good Theory, but Always Requires Context

I have to admit that if this line wasn't in the book, I would have likely rated this book lower:

"Does this mean you will be able to read anyone with perfect precision, every time? No. The system is not 100 percent foolproof. However, you will gain a definitive statistical advantage in every encounter."

The theory mentioned in this text is sound, but without a good grasp of the context of a situation, the information here is useless. It's important to understand how someone is, the experiences that affect them, and the context of the situation (formal vs. informal for example) so that reactions can be gauged properly.

Another warning about this book: Some of the examples are unclear without a conceptualization of the context, and without a firm grasp of the concept being discussed. It's not unusual to need to reread sections of the book and (to an extreme) ask questions.

As far as who I would recommend this book for... Although the title of the book makes it sound ideal for everybody, it really takes both intelligence and a good character to apply the techniques properly and accurately. When I say good character, I mean someone who is good at avoiding the pitfalls of human nature, such as egotism. Keep in mind that this book is based on Psychological principles, some of which we ourselves are subject to and that can intefere with our ability to use the methods defined here effectively.

Preface The principles of extreme programming have changed the way we think about software development. The Need to be Extreme

Both business people and software developers often view traditional software development techniques as too slow. Business people view software as a competitive advantage, and a competitive advantage can never be realized too quickly. Software developers believe that their traditional software development processes create too much overhead in their quest to deliver this advantage as quickly as possible.

The need to deliver software more quickly caused Kent Beck, Ward Cunningham, and Ron Jeffries to explore the extremes of certain development practices. The first XP project, the Chrysler Comprehensive Compensation system (code name C3), was, on one hand, constrained and, on the other, pushed to its limits. This practice was called "setting the dials to ten." The result was a breakthrough in the software development called XP.

Beck was certainly the driving force behind taking this project, and the multitude of others that have followed, to the extreme, and he continues to evolve XP. His vision continues as he asks us to question the basic principles of software engineering. Naturally, many of these principles are being replaced with new and better ones. New principles, such as working with a real live customer instead of a specification, are quickly gaining acceptance in the software community. The idea of creating tests before the software is written is quickly becoming a vital part of every software development process.

This book attempts to capture one point in the evolution of XP. We have examined the principles and have created what we believe to be effective practices. As a result, we believe that this short guide serves as a practical one from which to learn XP.

We used some of the XP principles to write this book (adapted, of course, for book writing). For example, various things that one of our customers felt we needed to cover were written on index cards and scheduled into the iterations of the book. This book has been continuously integrated and refactored. Hopefully, you, another customer, will like the finished product.

Good coverage of XP project cycle

A Practical Guide is at its best when bringing together different strands of thought from the XP community: referencing discussions from the WikiWikiWeb, bringing in the red-yellow-green metaphor for test-first programming, using concrete examples like those in Martin Fowler's book to illustrate refactoring. Another key contribution are the concrete examples from experience, of user stories and acceptance tests, conceptualization activities that are typically the hardest to nail down when first considering XP. Sidebars that draw connections between XP and tools like Ant and CruiseControl are useful as a starting point for figuring out how to support a real project.
Having the whole XP project cycle lined up in one book, extended with meatier, more detailed material (like the unit testing and refactoring discussions), should help the reader get a handle on the whole process and get a feel for what the day-to-day work will be like. It's certainly more digestible than tracking down dozens of XP papers and articles online, so it should be handy for people looking to quickly get up to speed on what XP currently looks like.

XP - Explained Succintly and Iteratively!

Although I have been a follower of XP and have read David Astels works before, I was initially apprehensive on reading another book on XP programming.
One of the goals of XP is to be succinct and iterative - ironically I had difficulty finding XP books that had followed the goals of XP. My assumption is that many of the books have been rushed to publication.
"Practical Guide to XP" has many more plusses than minuses. There are actual hands-on examples, with code. About a quarter of the book is devoted to test and source code from an XP project. I am normally not a big fan of having complete source code from a project in a book - aside from making the book heavier it generally serves little purpose. In this particular case, it makes sense as the processes of XP can be "followed through". XP is a development process/philosophy - as such it is better for newcomers to follow an actual implementation to fully appreciate the concepts.
This book will help somewhat to clear the fog on the many views on XP. XP, like all development methodologies, is a combination of art and science. There will be many views on methods of practicing XP and each project will be unique. This book will help you decide what you need to use for your particular project.

The definite "Gospel Book" to preach XP in your company

Initiate a paradigm shift in an organisation is hard, as anyone who had tried can tell you. People need to be convinced beyond doubt that the shift is beneficial and can actually be implemented. And, more importantly, that they need assurance that YOU, NOT THEM, are the one who is going to implement the change!!
Being a recent convert to the XP (Extreme Programming) camp, I am anxious to spread the "gospel". Being no born evangelist, I start looking for the one book that I can use to communicate XP clearly to convince both the management ("Look, it saves money and make customers happy!... No, they didn't pay me, really!") and programmers in the team ("Yo, this thing rocks!") so that they are willing to embrace the change , and at the same time, with enough practical advices and detail examples to the software architect (that's me) who need to know *how* XP can be implemented across the team.
"A Practical guide to eXtreme programming" is the book I found. And I wholeheartedly recommend it, here is why:
* The size of a "In a Nutshell" book, you can bring it along and read when you commute
* No fluff, jam pack with advices and examples, and the authors are courageous enough to include an appendix section showing a substantial example (1/3 of the whole book!!) of an XP project with the source code that clearly demonstrate the "Write Test First" and other programming principles advocate by XP. The perfect answer to the show-me-the-code programmers. Impressive!
* Do not try to sell you their proprietary CASE tools (Can you say "ROSE"?)
* Have pictures showing real programmers practicing XP (How many time have you seen programmers photo in a book?) This may sound trivial but that really make the readers feel XP is for real.
Now, this book surely make me feel confident and bold. So if you will excuse me, there are souls to be saved.

Arduino is not a new kid in the block, and many things are written about it, but you can be sure that not everything written is useful. With this book Francis Perea will help you if you are new to microcontrolers or you just want to have a nice reference around. The autor knows how to focus on the procedure and the key facts that you have to understand to keep you improving your skills about Arduino. He will guide you in a series of step-by-step assemblies using most common components and with a very well design path to Arduino Knowledge. Definitely a must read and a must have reference book about Arduino.

Best Book about Arduino

For a long time I've been reading books as a beginner / advanced Arduino , especially to meet the training needs of people who are new , including very early levels . It is not easy to have a good guide to all the possibilities of Arduino while it easy to assimilate by readers. In this book I found all this and more. All kinds of examples that introduce from the simplest to the most complicated work , easy to digest and implement that cover all needs. A global version of all well explained possibilities. I highly recommend it .
