Drone pilots -- who are they? and why it matters...

I'd heard about this being presented as a "one woman" theater production.
I never asked the question... "who flies the drones"? Are they pilots? How
do they get this kind of duty assignment? Where are they based? What is
their daily routine like? How is it different than flying aerial missions? What
is the psychological effect of having drone flying as a "job"... does the sense
of a military assignment disappear over time? So I'm framing this review as
a series of questions so as not to have to give a spoiler alert.

For any Vietnam veteran reading this -- it shakes the whole concept of "war".
For an Iraqi - Afghan veteran read this -- there is a sinking feeling of having devolved
into a different definition of soldiering, of serving and protecting.
And then... I think I heard that the play had been hijacked and made into a movie
with a male lead... Not the same! part of the tension in the journey is that this is
the hero's journey taken by.... a woman. And can it still be called... a hero's journey.

The next "Great Leap Forward" in Business Sciences

The term "Business Sciences" historically has been a misnomer, if not an oxymoron, as business schools have tended to take an applied approach to educating their students through a focus on proximate problems, methods, and results. This emphasis on pragmatism over theoretical synthesis and sophistication lends itself to "flavor of the month" trends and fads at the expense of in-depth studies searching for integrated insight into how and why homo economicus make their consumption and production decisions. Even when theory rears its head, much like a whack-a-mole, it is divorced from an over-arching framework and as a result is curiously flawed in understanding why humans do what they do. The field of economics, the flag bearer for theoretical approaches to business decision making (so much so, departments vacillate between belonging with their scientific brethren in the colleges of liberal arts and sciences, or with the financially remunerative endeavors of B-schools), has staunchly adhered to theoretical models that are dismal fictions of human behavior - specifically that humans are rational decision makers. As pointed out by Monica Capra and Paul Rubin in their chapter in this edited volume, "(E)conomists had been heavily influenced by physics, which aims at finding unified theories for understanding the physical world." (p. 322) When advances have been made in the field of economics (and Nobel Prizes awarded), it occurs when deviations from this rational choice model of individual decision making are pointed out and modeled. While this does not deny the contributions rational choice theory has made to the understanding of consumption and business decisions, mainly at the aggregate level, the stubborn adherence to this theoretical model by fields contained within business schools, as well as proximate fields of inquiry such as public administration and political science, is dispiriting. This adherence to models that continue to fail in accurately describing behavior - even when it is constrained to self-interested competitive behaviors predominantly seen in the business world - is at the very least disappointing, if not distressing, especially when a more powerful, robust, and integrated option exists. Furthermore, it suggests a blind dedication to delusions about human behavior that at best is inefficient and at worst is harmful by prioritizing misanthropic behavior.

Into this void steps Gad Saad, Professor of Marketing and Concordia University Research Chair in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences and Darwinian Consumption, with a collection of twelve chapters contributed by eminent scholars from around the globe. Saad, whose apostolic zeal for applying evolutionary psychology to the business sector is evidence by a multitude of articles, TED talks, the books "The Consuming Instinct" and "The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption" and a popular blog on the Psychology Today website, brings together twenty-eight contributors representing a broad range of academic disciplines and problem sets dealt with. The high quality contributions suggest not only the unifying power evolutionary theory has in bringing together such diverse scholars, but also signals evolutionarily-based theory's ascendance as not just grand unifying theory but also as the eminently pragmatic approach to solving real-world problems faced by businesspersons across the world. Specifically, by understanding that human behavior is selected for based upon problems posed in our distant evolutionary past, and as a result, such behavior helped humans survive, reproduce, and thrive, might help us understand current behaviors that are not necessarily beneficial in the modern world. For instance, ultimate causation suggests that humans who were able to find and consume fatty, sweet, and/or salty foods were better able to survive and reproduce in ancestral environments; however, in the modern world the abundance of foods with fat, sugar, and salt, as well as the mimicry of these qualities by foods deficient in them, leads to maladaptive proximate behaviors such as obesity, and concurrent health problems.

In conclusion, the wide-ranging collection addresses a range of issues through the unified lens of evolutionary theory in a manner accessible to not just academics, but intellectually curious students of the business world. Although scholars may disagree on the specifics of evolutionary theory, this edited volume provides an integrated framework by which a broad array of business-related concerns may be fruitfully addressed, as well as provide a means by which those who wish to gain the upper hand in the applied world of business can obtain the necessary edge. In this sense, Evolutionary Psychology in the Business Sciences is a worthy successor to Jerome Barkow, Leda Cosmides and John Tooby's "The Adapted Mind: Evolutionary Psychology and the Generation of Culture," which introduced students and scholars to applications of evolutionary theory to a broad range of social issues. If this collection finds the audience it deserves, it likewise has the potential to alter a disjointed field of business sciences by providing order and growth to not just research, but also practical application of lessons learned. Comprehensive on Evolutionary Psychology's implications in business, finance and marketing

One thing to initially mention is that this is a collection of academic papers put together to a book by editor Dr. Gad Saad. What I want to have said with that is that this might not be your first read if you're just a bit curious on evolutionary psychology (EP). If you want a good introduction to EP I would suggest to start with Dr. Saad's "The Consuming Instinct. That's what I did and got hooked.

Most of the papers are EP applied on organizational theory, leadership and marketing, which are not my main interests. However, the theories and evidence provided in those papers are applicable to so much more. I mainly bought and read this book to learn more about EP and furthermore how it can be applicable in Behavioral Finance. There are some papers about decision making, which is relevant i this sense, but most relevant and to me most interesting was "Rationality and Utility: Economics and Evolutionary Psychology". As the authors of this chapter phrase it: " Nonetheless, overall, it appears that this mode of thinking has had less of an effect on economics, and particularly on behavioral economics, than might be justified. We think there is much room for improvement, and we hope that economists will agree with us."

I am an economist and a behavioral finance enthusiast and I totally agree, there is definitely a lot that economics and behavioral finance can have use of from EP.

I find this book highly interesting and a great encyclopedia for EP. I think that no matter what your main are of interest is you'll find a lot of interesting applications of EP that will spur new ideas and new applications of EP. I haven't been able to find a better book on EP and its applications in business, marketing and finance, so I highly recommend it to anyone that has a great interest for learning more about EP.

Great book - A must on every book shelf

I was very surprised by the quality of this book. It's so long and so deep that the whole subject is covered in a way, that it doesn't leave you in any doubt that this is not just a theory anymore, but as close to the truth as we can possibly come.

I wish that every leader who has over 100 employees under him would read this book. And I hope that they will take the time to read it. If you can only read 1 book in your life, and you want to work with leadership - this could very well be the book you should choose. At least you can't argument against the points made in this book. And all the points have huge studies behind them. A book for everyone who want's to be the best mind in business science.

Meticulously researched and well written it tells the compelling story of the immediate post-liberation years in which Holocaust survivors returned to life - to Jewish life in social, political, religious, cultural and above all personal terms. About the Author
Margarete Myers Feinstein is Senior Research Scholar at The Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights at Claremont McKenna College. Interested in questions of identity and legacies of the Nazi regime, her research has focused on postwar German national identity and Jewish displaced persons. She is the author of State Symbols: The Quest for Legitimacy in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, 1949-1959 as well as numerous articles.

This book is a detailed guide to the life of Jewish refugees in Germany's displaced persons (DP) camps; it addresses a variety of issues, from health care to religious life to immigration. The most surprising part of the book was how unprepared the U.S. and U.K. were to handle Jewish refugees.

At first, they thought Jewish and non-Jewish refugees could mix together in the same camps; but since some of the non-Jewish refugees were Nazis or Nazi sympathizers, this didn't work out. Then they thought that the camps would only exist a year or two, because Jews would return to their homes. But many Jews didn't want to stay in Europe after years of being murdered by Europeans. In fact, Jews came from all over eastern Europe to the DP camps, expecting that they would soon be able to move to Israel. Instead, they were stuck in the DP camps for several years; the British (who ran Israel) were not prepared to allow large numbers of Jews there, and the U.S. was not prepared to let large numbers of refugees in either. The logjam did not end until after the birth of the state of Israel in 1948; 60 percent of the refugees then moved there. Not long afterwards, the U.S. loosened its immigration restrictions, and most of the rest moved to the U.S.

Fascinating book on Holocaust Survivors

Holocaust Survivors in Postwar Germany, 1945-1957 by author Margarete Feinstein is another well-read and well researched book. I liked it better than her first book she wrote. Very illuminating and poignant reading.
I have a vested interest in Holocaust Studies over the past 10 to 15 years, due to my fathers' war letters (written home to his family), on the terrible things he witnessed in the concentration camps during World War II.
Once again, my only criticism is the high price tag of the book. In todays economy it is rather steep.

The classic protestant view updated.

Edward follows and updates the reformers position on the antichrists being the popes. Since the Reformation, there is more evidence of the infiltration of the Roman Catholic church by crypto-Jews. There is more documentation that it is not just a few bad apples that are infecting the Church of Rome. Readers should be aware that there are over 140 pages of references to back up his claims. His prior books on the Anti-gospel and Bloody Zion fill in his views on the errors of Protestants also. I would love to know what Michael Hoffman and E. Michael Jones think of Edwards books. I believe there are still many Christians still in the Roman Catholic church. Perhaps they see themselves like the young Martin Luther trying to reform it from within. And they will either leave it eventually or be kicked out. Meanwhile, I believe this book will still shock many Roman Catholics. I hope they read it.

An excellent resource.

The Luthier's Handbook's reputation as "the Bible" for stringed instrument making is well-deserved, particularly for anyone interested in the "why" of design and construction practices. (For those more interested in the step-by-step "how" of building a guitar, I'd recommend William R. Cumpiano's Guitarmaking:Tradition and Technology. They make an excellent set.)

As a point of reference, I have a science and engineering background. My experience to date in this area has been limited to some minor instrument repair and set-up. I have a fair amount of experience in woodworking. I found this book to be very clear and readable. Based on limited experience and knowledge, I think this would also be an extremely valuable resource for anyone who has been building basic instruments who might want to try to vary their designs based on sound first principles.

It's unfortunate the author didn't choose a better title. You'd probably expect THE Luthiers Handbook to be a how-to, but it's nothing like that. Actually it reads more like a college-level textbook. Engineering/techies will probably love it, as will anyone seriously interested in the how & why of fine instrument architecture. There's a lot in here about the tonal properties of various woods, bracings, etc. Even if you never figure out the author's 'tuning' method (or don't have your own home physics lab) you still might find yourself tapping on soundboards and thinking about such things. For the beginning luthier sticking to the tried and true, it's not essential reading however.

Read the preface before buying and complaining

The book gives exactly what the preface says. It is a collection of all the things a luthier should know and a little history behind them. It is not a construction manual and should not be criticized for not being what it is not. I actually bought this book for the tap tuning section alone but am delighted with the rest of it.
