Wonderful.

Every now and then I read a book written for youngsters that looks interesting. This 73 year-old guy thought this book was wonderful, and I'll encourage my grandson to read it. It was very well written, as well. It takes a look at race relations without getting "preachy". BTW, I was born in Brooklyn in 1942 (however, I have to admit that I was a Yankees fan).

Such an amazing story

I was in Boise Idaho for my niece's bridal shower when I discovered this gem at a charming bookstore on Main Street. I about died when I found out that Jackie's daughter was doing a book signing for her new book. Unfortunately I was leaving a day before the signing. I was so sad but at the same time I am so glad I found this book. I would have loved to meet her! I loved this story, from start to finish. I loved how we as the readers got to know the heart of not only Jackie Robinson but his wife and son along with the Satlow family. As I was reading this story I kept thinking this would be the neatest to live 2 doors down from your hero. I loved how we were able to see the friendship that was built between the two of them, meaning Jackie and Steven. Jackie really taught Steven about life lessons, and how we can make a difference in the lives of those around us. I also loved how the Satlows and Robinsons shared family traditions with each other. Jackie cherished the times the times he spent with Jackie. Steven learned that even though he was the biggest dodgers fan but Jackie was more than that to him, he was a friend, and they became like family. It was neat hearing about the Brooklyn Dodgers, and how many people loved them and how devastating it was when they moved to LA. There are two quotes I love in the book, this happens in the Epilogue and years later when Steven is going to Medical school and his father had just died. "You can't look back, Steve you've got to keep moving on and up. You'll become your best self if you stay focused, set goals, and don't let anyone stop you from making your dreams come true." This is so great because Jackie lived his dreams, he may have retired from Baseball and now a businessman but he still lived his dreams. The last quote I loved was "A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives" I highly recommend this book!!!!! Whether you are young or old everyone would love to live two doors down from their hero.

Sharon Robinson hits a home run

Sharon Robinson hits a home run with a story based on a true event in the life of her father, baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I began reading "The Hero Two Doors Down" in the evening and had my light burning past midnight to finish it.

We are introduced to the main character in a way that made me not like him very much. That may not sound like a book that would keep me up late reading, but I came to appreciate the author's intent. The eight-year-old protagonist, Steve, is established in the reader's mind as a real person with strengths, flaws and weaknesses.

When Jackie Robinson moves to the predominantly Jewish neighborhood "two doors down" from Steve, both of their lives are changed in unexpected ways.

Ms. Robinson brings to life the atmosphere of New York in the 1940s, along with the special friendship and understanding that develops between the two families.

This is a thoughtful book that is also a lot of fun for baseball and history fans.

Great Resource for the Church

The Heidelberg Catechism is one of the great historic confessions. It has been a blessing to me personally as well as to my family. When I found out that Reformed Baptist Academic Press was releasing An Orthodox Catechism by Hercules Collins (a Particular Baptist revision of the Heidelberg Catechism) I was very excited. I am truly thankful for the work that the editors, Michael A. G. Haykin and G. Stephen Weaver Jr. have put into making this catechism available for modern day Baptists.

Collins' opening words in his preface show his intent in writing this catechism. He states, "Forasmuch as there is but a small time allotted unto any of us in this world, and not knowing but my staff stands next to the door ready to depart, I am desirous in this respect so to bestow my precious and present time in my Lord’s business, as I may not return to him with my talent wrapped up in a napkin, but may leave behind me some poor token and testimony of my love and duty towards Him, and His blessed spouse the Church." In 1680, when An Orthodox Catechism was first published, it is hard to imagine that Collins would expect that his 'poor token', his catechism, would still be blessing the Church. Thanks to Reformed Baptist Academic Press and the editors An Orthodox Catechism will be a blessing to the Church for many years to come.

An Orthodox Catechism is a great tool for modern day Baptists to be able to use to understand and teach sound doctrine. The Chapter and Question divisions make this a great tool to systematically work through individually, during family devotions or in teaching a class. The Scripture references are notated in such a way that the reader is able to easily see where each part of the answer comes from in the Bible. I was very pleased that the layout of the catechism added to the value of its content.

As a home-school parent this will be a great resource for my family for many years. I am truly grateful for this work, and highly recommend An Orthodox Catechism.

This book is a small gem, it reminds me of the pocket Puritans reprints of the catechisms out now. Honestly I would be very happy if they did add this to their collection. As I said before this is a small gem packed with biblical truth not only to help those young in the faith but also for those who are not. Also this book is from a Reformed/ Particular Baptist position so certain questions have been modified. So there is a specific audience this book is for. Again this is a book any Christian will and should delight in.

A catechism based on the Heidelberg for Particular (i.e. Reformed) Baptists.

The Heidelberg Catechism, a Reformed catechism which was used to establish the Reformed faith in the Palatinate, an area of Germany in the 16th Century C.E., is loved by Paedobaptist and Credobaptists alike. Hercules Collins, a Particular Baptist who lived in the later half of the 16th Century and into the early 17th Century, adapted the Heidelberg Catechism for his congregation. His result was the Orthodox Catechism.

Along with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith and the Baptist Catechism commonly attributed to Benjamin Keach, the Orthodox Catechism is an excellent teaching document for teaching in churches and in the home. Hercules Collins was a Particular Baptist pastor of the largest Particular Baptist congregation in London when he penned the Orthodox Catechism. Collins was among those who had been imprisoned by the British Government for violating the Clarendon Code. As a non-conformist Puritan at odds with the Anglican State Church, Collins saw some of his fellow ministers die in prison. After his release from prison, Collins signed the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, which was based on the Westminster Confession and the Savoy Declaration, used by Presbyterian and Congregationalist Churches, respectively, before his work on the Orthodox Catechism.

This edition of the Orthodox Catechism has been edited somewhat for clarity. A section on the laying on of hands after baptism has been omitted. There is a short biography of Collins and an overview of the catechism included. A great edition to the library of a Reformed Baptist home, this catechism can also be used in church study groups.

An excellent bok

This book covers, in great detail, processes used during manufacturing with advanced composites. Based on the airospace industry it is highly precise and so offers a range of standards and guidlines for those with lesser experience and or access to lesser equipment. It has become my bible.

Fantastic Fundamentals!

Based on his decades of composites manufacturing expertise, this (now passed on) Boeing Senior Technical Fellow has put together a thorough, yet thoroughly accessible compendium on advanced composite (primarily fiber reinforced polymers) materials and their related manufacturing processes.

A must-read for any engineer or technologist currently working in the advanced composites field.

On a personal note: the world lost more than a world-class composite engineer when Flake passed away in December 2012. He was a great man and will be sorely missed.
