I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits

Flawlessly well-written, as one would expect, I found this book simple to follow, brimming with clear examples and solid on grammar/spelling/punctuation usage. I will be dipping into it much as I write and edit and have already implemented a style guide based on its template. There are many suggested ways of copy-editing, proofreading — you get to test-drive which methods suits you — with little pieces from experienced editors on how they approach their work. I would recommend this to anyone who writes and self-edits, from indie authors such as me to bloggers. This book is very practical and gets you up to speed fast.

Middle of the Road

I had to take a proofreading test for a job interview, so I thought this book might help me brush up on my proofreading skills. I didn't really like the general information, I found the advice to be very obvious and I feel like you could get that information for free on the internet. However, I did find the exercises to be somewhat helpful. Dedicating an entire exercise to "there, their, and they're" may not have been that constructive, but some of the other exercises did help me pay greater attention to detail for the test.

The perfect Mother's Day gift

This is such a readable book. I just bought three copies for my mom and sister and mother-in-law. The perfect Mother's Day gift. There are so many amazing stories. It's not all about gossip either. There's a story about 9/11 and how there was a barbecue planned at the White House and there were so many tables and chairs set out for the event. Since the White House was a target, they had to evacuate all of the staff. People were running out of the White House to safety. They were terrified, as I would be too! One of the staff members was so busy working downstairs at his job that he didn't hear the Secret Service evacuating everyone. He came upstairs and wondered where everyone had gone. Meanwhile the head chef and head usher decided to stay on the grounds of the WH and take down all of those chairs and tables because if they didn't do it no one else would. They spent all morning during 9/11 doing their duties.

What's really incredible about this book is the dedication and service these men and women have made to serving not just the first families, but the institution of the White House. There are some families who have generations of family members who have served there. One family had like 5 or 6 family members working at the White House. They all loved and honored the traditions there and they all served no matter who got elected.

One other thing I loved: You don't realize it until you read just how complicated it is for the first family to move into the White House. One family moves out with moving trucks, while the new family moves in -- all while the inauguration is taking place. It's so cool. I love this book and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the presidency or the institution of the WH.

A Redundant Not Reveal All

Several reviewers who didn't really care for this book have commented that if one has never before read a "White House book" then this would probably be a good one for them. Well, I am one of these first timers and I wasn't all that impressed either. The writing is rather repetitive. The theme of the staff's loyalty and selflessness runs very heavily throughout every single anecdote. I realize that the author and the staff are trying to balance a fine line of remaining respectful to the first families while also striving to provide enough detail to catch the readers' attention, but I found the writing to be dry and the saintliness of the staff to be a smidgeon tiresome. Really, the book suffers from a lack of true character development, whether with the members of the first families or the White House maids and butlers (yes, even biographies benefit from character development), with the possible exception of the LBJ coverage, which provided some of the most interesting material in the book. This book wasn't quite the page turner I had hoped it would be.

I loved this book

I loved this book. The Residence gives the reader a real sense of the people who support the families that live in the White House. It is a fascinating glimpse into life in the White House and the people who inhabit it. Although the interviewees confidentiality prevented them from revealing too much, there is just enough scintillating stories to make this book a great read.
There are stories about the Kennedy's, hilarious stories about Johnson, of course the Clintons, and Bushes. What I found interesting were that my political views aside these people were kind and caring to the staff, so I felt like I got to see them as human beings and not just politicians with an agenda.
Learning about the staff was as interesting as learning about the first families. Some of these people were second and third generation. They served from a true place of service. They were extraordinary people whose commitment was incredibly inspiring.

Reingold's attempt to impart, in sentences of almost 100 words, a VR vision of his experiences in the "cybernetic sandbox" will mean little to readers unfamiliar with the programming problems of VR. Neologisms like "metaplay" and "teledildontics" (sex in a bed of VR) seem like carny-barker teasers, trivializing potential VR applications in engineering, medicine and education. A more linear approach to the topic might have better fit Reingold's purposes.

What they thought VR would be back in the 90's

A historical reference for what they thought VR would be back in the day. When this was written, it was thought that VR was right around the corner. Now 20+ years later, we are still just scratching the surface of what VR could be. Many of the authors ideas for where this could go have yet to be realized, so this book can still be mined for ideas and concepts.

A little dated, but still very pertinent

Back when Internet access was uncommon, Howard Rheingold was traveling the world, talking to VR researchers. He'd visit a lab, give them a presentation about what he'd seen in other places, then see what they had been developing. Then, he'd go to another lab, frequently in another country, and do the same, incorporating what he'd seen at the last place into his presentation. In this fashion, he was serving as a walking information nexus. Researchers who were largely unaware of other research going on in other places would learn about each other, and make contact with each other, as a result of his travels and his presentations.

Hell of a gig if you can get it. Where do I sign up for something like that? And get paid to do it?

Many of the technologies he writes about are still unknown, a decade later. They were cool when he wrote about them. They're still cool. They just haven't gone mainstream, for one reason or another.

If you buy and read this book today, you won't spend much time thinking "gee, that's old hat." Much of it is still quite eye-opening.

The guys in the UK who were using compressed air and hoses, where many people would be trying to use hydraulic actuators (much higher cost), were very interesting.

The differences between US and Japanese mindsets, WRT wearing headsets, was very amusing.

Creating a device which you can move with your hand, which simulates different textures, was intriguing. Not sure what the practical applications are for that, but it was definitely intriguing. There's a whole realm of VR there which I don't know that anyone is touching.

The high-speed motorcycle ride through Brooklyn, without physically moving, would be very fun to try. Even if it was film-based, back before the advent of cheap electronic displays. The fact that the guy even managed to incorporate wind, coming from different directions, and scent makes that one truly ground-breaking.

I'd love to see an updated version, with "where are they now" information on more of the projects. I can't imagine what else has been developed in the interim.

First published in 1991, this is a gem that should be one of the first readings of anyone contemplated the sacred and the scary aspects of how humans, machines, and software are being changed by emerging information technologies. While there is a lot of focus on "cool tools" and all the paraphenalia of "virtual reality" qua artificial sensation and perception, the rock bottom foundation of this book can be found in Howard reflections on what it all means for the transformation of humans, business, and society in general.

About the Author

Lewis A. Coser (1913-2003) began his career teaching at the University of Chicago followed by the University of California. Upon leaving California he went to teach for fifteen years at Brandeis University, where he founded the sociology department, before finally settling in at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. He was the first sociologist to bring together the ideas of conflict theory and structural functionalism. He is a past American Sociologist Association president and author of many works, including Conflict and Consensus, Masters of Sociological Thought, and The Functions of Social Conflict.

You say "conflict" like it's a bad thing . . .

This stimulating work explores the paradoxical thesis that conflict is not socially destructive in most cases, but rather an essential mechanism in the positive evolution of society. I am not well versed in the literature of sociology, but it appears to me that since its appearance in 1956, this little book has achieved deservedly the status of a classic.

Over the course of eight chapters the author discusses sixteen propositions regarding the nature of social conflict. Each proposition is stated initially as a quotation from the work "Conflict" of German sociologist Georg Simmel ("Der Streit," 1908). The author then comments on the initial statement, drawing on his obviously vast learning in the fields of sociology, psychology, politics, and history. Each of the sixteen commentaries concludes with a restatement of the original proposition incorporating modifications deemed appropriate from the survey of more recent works.

This structure makes the book as useful as a reference as it is interesting to read straight through. The reader who wants only to refresh the memory or who is interested in only part of the work can easily locate the relevant numbered proposition.

I can think of no better way to convey a sense of this work than to rephrase below in my own words some of the key propositions:

Proposition 2: The ability to engage in conflict with disagreeable individuals allows us to remain in a social relationship with them. Conflict prevents them from growing even more abusive while also giving us some emotional satisfaction. Without conflict, we would be forced to withdraw altogether from social contact with such people.

Proposition 7: Open societies derive strength from the large number of antagonistic groups that they include. Cross-membership in a number of these groups keeps individuals from orienting themselves on one side or the other of a single dividing issue threatening social cohesion. The varied antagonisms and conflicts cancel each other out.

Proposition 8: Relationships characterized by open and frequent conflict are often the most stable. Conflict tends to be suppressed by parties who fear that their relationship is too unstable to survive the tumult.

Proposition 13: Conflict tends to bind the antagonists into acceptance of a common social order. Conventions regarding the rules of warfare are one outstanding example. Virtually all law is the result of social conflict.

Proposition 14: Despite the disadvantages of disunity in conflict, the parties to any given conflict will tend to prefer unity in the ranks of their adversaries. Only a unified adversary can be counted upon to adhere to the rules of engagement and to the terms of the agreement that concludes the conflict.

My own interest in reading "The Functions of Social Conflict" arose from a desire to pursue the intriguing similarity between its thesis and the arguments of certain writers on the process of group decision-making. They claim that getting a group together to understand the differences among them can build a strong social bond. The process to reach understanding can be ugly when there are strongly conflicting interests, but the social bond that results can be a powerful force keeping the group together through the difficulties of developing a joint solution to their problem. I can't prove it, but I'd bet that these writers have read Lewis Coser.

An index and extensive footnotes add usefulness to the inherent interest of this fine book.

Walking Wounded resonates so loud and clear to different life situations which many people unfortunately have endured!

I was truly drawn into the book from beginning to end! The story was well pieced together. I was able to visualize the events as they unfolded and could feel her pain and suffering in which she and her family had to endure. The true testimony is the way she was able to draw strength from the Lord and her surrounding support system. This book does not relate to any life experiences I've had, but I can still relate with other dark experiences I've endured. The one constant in my life to help me to make it through tough times is always drawing strength from the Lord and family alike. I would recommend this book for people of all walks of life for it is very inspirational and offers realistic solutions to very traumatic experiences.

This book is full of inspiration, determination and spirit. The journey from darkness to light. This is the best depiction of overcoming life's obstacles that I have seen in my lifetime. This is a must read for anyone looking for motivation to transcend to their next level in life. It took me one day to read this book I could not put it down.

I consider this an enlightening work. Having walked from a very dark place to a place of light myself, I could identify with alot of what Cori experienced. The specifics of my journey were different, but the resolution (finding God in it all) was the same. I would recommend this highly.

This experience ranges from the early days of custom redundant systems to today's fault-tolerant offerings from HP (NonStop) and Stratus.Dr. Bill Highleyman has done extensive work on the effect of failure mode reduction on system availability. He has built fault-tolerant systems for train control, racetrack wagering, securities trading, message communication, and other applications. He is the Managing Editor of the Availability Digest (availabilitydigest.com).Paul J. Holenstein and Dr. Bruce Holenstein have architected and implemented the various data replication techniques required for the availability enhancements described in this book.
