A wonderful addition to learning aids for classical Chinese

It was Chinese poetry, then later painting, that began my continuing fascination with Chinese culture. I have struggled to learn classical Chinese and have been frustrated by the poor teaching materials available. This, together with A New Practical Primer of Literary Chinese (Harvard East Asian Monographs) by Paul Rouzer, is the best. The author was one of those immensely learned scholars who put his energy into teaching rather than writing. Fortunately some of his colleagues are putting together his teaching materials, of which this is the first to be published.
Not only does it make study of literary Chinese interesting by selecting tests of interest,rather than dull exercises, there is an immense amount of information about Chinese poetry that I have seen nowhere else.
If you have any interest in the literary language of traditional China, or its poetry, but this book.

Amazing - well worth the read

It is probably better if you know some chinese (modern or classical) before dipping into this book, but even without, there is much to learn and pick up. The style is easy to read and as an ABC to classical chinese poetry there is really nothing like it at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you need one book to start to appreciate the language and the poetry of ancient China, this book is definitely it.

I have dozens of books on Chinese and Chinese poetry, but this is one of the best. Archie Barnes was a true teacher, and this book is a gift to those of us who want to learn both Chinese and Chinese poetry. "Chinese through Poetry" is so good I went to the Monterey Language Institute to study Chinese so I could get more out of this book. Even if you haven't had the good fortune to study Chinese, "Chinese through Poetry" is valuable.

If you are going into these books for your first time I feel you should start with the book "The Illuminati" by Adam Weishaupt. That book will give you an excellent overview of the philosophy of the Illuminati. I will very quickly give you a rundown of what I feel are two of the most important aspects of the Illuminati's philosophy. The Illuminati are Gnostics and Meritocrats. Meritocracy is the political wing of the Illuminati and at its core it is about allowing all people to begin life from an equal starting position so that everyone has the best possible chance to fully actualize their innate potential. And no, that will absolutely not happen through "free market" capitalism. Another reviewer of this book took issue with the Illuminati because they don't believe "free marketeers" are the people closest to human perfection. The said reviewer gave this book five stars so that is good but these libertarian capitalists can drive me crazy. Sometimes I wonder if they are at all honest with themselves. Have they even looked at the world we are living in? If they did they would immediately see that "free market" capitalism is one of the main reasons this world is such a selfish, unequal, miserable, and lets face it, evil place for billions of humans and non-humans living on this planet. And lets not even mention what capitalism is in the process of doing to the environment. If the environment goes it's game over. I digress though. If you are curious about Meritocracy then read the Illuminati's book "The Meritocracy Party" by Michael Faust. It will answer any of the questions you might have about this amazing political system.

Since this book, "Jesus, Prince of Hell" (and I absolutely love the title), is more relative to Gnosticism I'm going to focus on that more so then Meritocracy. Gnosis is Greek for knowledge. Gnosticism is the religious wing of the Illuminati. The Illuminati's version of Gnosticism is the highest form of Gnosticism and it is called Illumination or Illuminism. Gnosticism is all about knowledge not faith. The abrahamic religions of faith are anathema to Gnostics. Gnostics believe that the material world we all live in is created by an evil being. That evil being is none other then then the creator "god" from the Torah, Bible, and Koran. In Gnosticism our souls are trapped here in the material world over many incarnations. Our souls must go on the most heroic and difficult journey imaginable until we finally attain Gnosis. Attaining Gnosis is to intuitively achieve, through hard work, the most powerful knowledge in the cosmos and truly remember and therefore become what we have always been, literally Goddesses and Gods. When Gnosis is attained a soul has full knowledge of the cosmos. At that point we can finally escape the material realm and join the other souls that have attained Gnosis in a wondrous realm of light. Doesn't that sound like a much healthier religion then the abrahamic religions of faith that want you on your knees to a tyrant god who has massacred an untold number of people and bragged about it in his own "holy" book? Doesn't that sound like a much healthier religion then the eastern religions and new age religions of karma that say if you are suffering in this life then you deserve it because karma is punishing you and, therefore, there is no need for anyone to help you? Disgusting.

So to the Illuminati Jesus Christ was a nefarious figure and he had no intention whatsoever of empowering humanity. On the contrary, his intentions were to make controlling humanity even easier. Much of the astonishing story of Jesus Christ is hinted at in the four gospels for open eyed readers to see. The Illuminati use the four mainstream gospels, the Gospel of Judas (Judas was a member of the Illuminati), and other writings to tell the story of the man history knows as Jesus Christ. His actual name was Yehoshua ben Yosef (Joshua son of Joseph). Just know that the information contained in this book in unique. You will not find it anywhere else. It is some of the most mind blowing information I have ever read. Always remember to read anything with skepticism and caution. Read what the Illuminati have to say about Jesus Christ and then compare it with the Christian version of events. Use your intuition. Which version, if either, sounds more credible to you? Unlike the Christians, the Illuminati won't condemn you to an eternity of fiery torture in hell if you don't believe them. "Jesus, Prince of Hell" along with "The Reincarnation of Jesus Christ" by Michael Faust will answer all of the most important and mysterious questions surrounding Yehoshua ben Yosef, the man we all know as Jesus Christ.

We live in a world too few understand....and most do not care to try. It is disheartening to say the least. A friend asked me why I would read such distressing material. It is because truth must never be neglected simply because it is unpalatable. On the contrary...it is Imperative to recognize the validity of your situation in order to better do something about it. I can only instruct as well as I am educated. My lifelong pursuit has always been truth. I have suffered innumerable tragedies that have been perpetrated upon me by my government. It boggles comprehension to entertain the reasons. No amount of coincidence can accommodate my dilemma. This book is a short study on why things remain as they are. Good luck to you and may truth prevail.

excellent book in best series on Christianity

I read this years ago as an article series, and do not recall verbatim, but think it is the best (along with his others and those of the two associated writers) introductory modern series on rationalist idealism in Classical Greek & Cartesian & German Idealist philosophy & postmodernism, including Pythagoreanism/Illumination, Platonism, Hermetism, Gnosticism, Leibnizianism, Hegelianism, formal & natural & social science, religion, and the arts, in this case on mathematics, gnosticism, and the falseness/evil of popular religion, etc. As Gnosticism says, Jesus was an agent of the archons, or an archon himself, so described as the prince of Hell.

Great book

This is an excellent textbook that gives you the basics of teaching in an elementary classroom. This is NOT a "ready to use" resource in which it would give you printable items. It does give you some good ideas about sequencing for grades K-5. This is a must for new teachers, especially ones who may not feel ready to teach an elementary music classroom.

I have used this book in my Elementary Music Methods class for many years, but felt it was getting too expensive and needed an update. Both of those problems were fixed in the 5th Edition. It is well-organized and also has come way down in price. Definitely going to keep using it!

A complicated machine

“How (Research) Universities Work” is probably a more apt title. Although this book compares different types of universities, the focus is clearly on research universities.

There are many books about the inner workings of universities, but few are as readable as this tidy 200-page book. A nice airplane read rather than an exhaustive encyclopedia, it is peppered with opinions and vignettes. Some of the perspectives probably reflect Lombardi’s sudden exit from his university president appointments. He clearly doesn’t have much love for interminable committee discussions or governing boards.

Lombardi argues that research is the underlying context of a university, driving the quality of the institution, including the breadth and depth of undergraduate and graduate programs. Of course, teaching is also critical for a university, but he argues that skilled teachers are much more common than successful researchers. In addition, the best teachers only impact students who pass through their classes, while a productive researcher will have an international influence. This perspective leads to one of his vignettes describing his advice to a new assistant professor about achieving tenure: “…the reward for research is delayed until long after the work is done, while the feedback for teaching and service is now. Resist the reinforcement of super teaching and the siren song of community service; instead, do the research. No one believes in the promise of research, only in the demonstration of published results.”

Research universities are inherently highly competitive, continually vying for grants, the best students, and reputation. Thus, time is the enemy of success. “… every minute university people do not use to apply for a grant, recruit a student, improve the university, or do some other critical job, competitor institutions have the opportunity to move ahead.” To succeed in this highly competitive business, universities do not have to be visionary, but must be goal oriented and proactive. Despite the critical flaws of university rankings, the perception of the university affects its bottom line both directly and indirectly.

Despite the best strategy, it all gets down to money and people. The source of funding is precarious, there is never money enough to invest in all of the needed projects, and research is a money losing operation. Moreover, since all of the operations of a university rely on people, a university needs to invest in quality faculty and staff. Hence, much of the book is focused on how universities spend money, how to best track money, and how to set priorities for budgeting. Although there is considerable discussion of performance based investments, it would have been nice to have a few more details about the criteria that Lombardi thinks is most critical to set these priorities.

In short, this is an interesting, readable book that discusses nearly all aspects of the university, from the importance of people to governance, measuring quality to budgeting, supportive organizations to critics, and the delicate balance of immobility and change. You may not agree with all of his perspectives, but they will definitely make you think.

Well worth reading

How Universities Work is an eminently readable text. It would serve well as required reading for state legislators, governors, and university trustees. As stated, the book’s primary emphasis is directed at understanding the major research universities, but there is a wealth of understanding, by contrast, to be gained for people affiliated with other universities and colleges.

One of the most striking features of the book is Lombardi’s constant referral to faculty guilds. That is a deliberate, and most effective, means of communicating how faculty are shaped and how they think and how they interact with the research university.

If there is a weakness to the book, it is the very modest use of boldface or italics to highlight some very important passages in the text. The book is communicating a great deal of information, and some of it is actually wisdom. One can wish that italics might have been used to highlight the latter.

One reviewer referred to Lombardi’s examples in the following fashion: “Lombardi inserts fictional "dialogues" between various people to try to convey his points, but these generally come across as snarky and unenlightening.” Quite the contrary, these are neither snarky nor unenlightening. “Devastatingly accurate” is a more apt description of these dialogues.

One possibly surprising omission in the book is the topic of academic freedom as it relates to both faculty and students. If there is a second edition to the book, Lombardi might consider addressing this because it is certainly something widely misunderstood by various university constituencies.

The book is well worth reading.

From the Author
"Sustainability and Design Ethics" grew out of my experiences as a working professional and as an academic.   Clearly the very nature of the duty design professionals have to society and the public welfare require some rethinking as we begin to address issues of sustainability.  Even some principles of design ethics that are foundational may need to be rethought and reinterpreted in a sustainable world.  This book was written to provide some input into the thinking and discussion that should lead to change.

Tom Russ is a professor of environmental technology at the College of Southern Maryland, La Plata, USA.  He is also the author of "Site Planning and Design Handbook" and "Redeveloping Brownfields."

Not impressed

No concrete information, somewhat of a philosophical rant about nature. This was recommended reading to study for the LARE but I can't image what kind of questions they would be able to ask from it? Not worth $60.
